Gee whiz people... read!

a plan to abolish all federal income and payroll taxes and...

Don't be such a lemming. This is the LA Times trying to make you think it's a new 23% tax - it's not. And while we're here, forget the money for a moment. The Fair Tax would completely strip the congress of the ability to enact the kind of social engineering we Freepers (are supposed to ) despise. At least TRY to get a clue...

The Democrats have said it a 23% extra tax on top of the income tax. What they fail to mention is that it would eliminate the income tax and every other federal tax. Its amazing how the tax and spend party has positioned itself as the champion of a system that raises money inefficiently and has resulted in the most bloated federal government we've had in the history of our nation. In truth the Fair Tax would lead to the opposite result.

No it wouldn't, rather Congree would just find new ways to screw us. For example, they might start taxing certain goods and services at different rates to encourage or discourage consumption or other behavior. Or maybe Congress will tax different areas of the country at different rates depending upon economic need. And you can bet that Congress will prohibit the sellers of goods and services from itemizing the sales tax on the sales reciept so that the buyers can't tell how much the gov'ment is picking our pockets.

Don't misunderstand: I am in favor of a national sales tax provided the Federal income tax is repealed, the IRS is disbanded, and any change in the sales tax, including rebates, exemptions, etc., requires the vote of 3/4ths of both the Senate and the House. Yes, I realize that a national sales tax is imperfect and there will be inequities, but the alternative is to continue to complain about the current system. What has convinced me to support a national sales tax is that it will tax the underground economy, including illegal aliens and drug dealers.

Is the Fairtax carved in stone, never to be amended?

Is the congress you speak of the same congress you expect would pass such a law?...Get a clue indeed.

It might eliminate their ability to impose 'special taxes', e.g. the taxes on cigarettes, but it wouldn't stop their social programs. (And I would bet it wouldn't be long until they reinstituted those 'special taxes'.)
