>>I have been living in this country for the best part of a Century. During all that time I have never been asked for proof of my citizenship.<<
I guess that you’ve never registered to vote in U.S. elections, then, have you?
Would you want someone to register to vote in a U.S. election WITHOUT having to prove U.S. citizenship?
Would you want someone to register to vote in a U.S. election WITHOUT having to prove U.S. citizenship?
Shame on you for casting doubt upon my voting habits. Do you remember I LIKE IKE? Did you vote for him?
Do you remember those Democrats that pushed for the "Motor Voter" issue? The result of that was, the registrar of voters and the registrar of motor vehicles got together and decided that one could register to vote simply by checking a box on a vehicle license renual form. They also provide the same opportunity to register whenever you pay your taxes or renew your drivers license.
Today, many of those who gave us "Motor Voter" are now championing the cause of issuing a drivers license to those who do not have the time or the inclination to fill out the proper forms so that they may enjoy the benefits of our republic. Who could have foreseen such a sorry state of affairs?
I do not make the rules when it comes to immigration or registering to vote. Perhaps the coming system where the government will place a number in your head or on your hand will eliminate all this paperwork. Then we can all sleep safely in the beds we have made.
