The Rush Fallout for Huckabee: Fatal, or Missing the Target?
The Campaign Spot ^ | 12/21/2007 | Jim Geraghty

Posted on 12/21/2007 12:05:13 PM PST by Checkers

After today, Rush Limbaugh is in reruns until January 3, the day of the Iowa caucuses.

Highlight from a moment ago: "The drive bys are doing everything they can to influence the Republican primary. Mike Huckabee has been getting a pass from the drive-bys... They don't want Rudy because they think he can beat Hillary. They don't want Romney because of the same thing. They don't want Fred Thompson because of the same thing."

Can a guy who's been slammed as hard as Mike Huckabee has by Rush Limbaugh, the most popular conservative radio talk show host in the country, go on to win the Iowa caucuses? Anybody think Rush will have dropped this issue by the third of January?

My instinct is to say, "no way, a thumbs down from Rush is fatal," but a guy on another campaign cautions me. "An Iowa pastor who has been talking up Huckabee isn't going to change his mind because Rush Limbaugh doesn't like him." He points out that a pastors and religous leaders deal with people who fall short of their ideals all the time; hearing that Mike Huckabee was too merciful in dealing with Wayne Dumond is not going to be a dealbreaker for them. They'll probably go, no pun intended, "there but for the grace of God go I."

So... if a certain significant chunk of Huckabee's supporters back him because he's the most vocal Christian in the race, not because of the conservatism of his record or policy stances.... if the moment comes where the race needs a Huck Slayer (as social conservatives thought the race might require a Rudy Slayer)... can anybody in the race go after Huckabee on that ground? Can anyone make the argument to that Republican plurality, "Okay, nevermind conservative policy choices - he's not the good Christian leader you think he is"?

Tough ground to fight on. Just thinking out loud here, can a rival point out the ethics questions from Huckabee's Arkansas days? Is Huckabee's "innocent" question about Mormon beliefs the act of a good Christian? Is there something borderline blasphemous to compare opponents' direct mail to a Biblical verse describing "weapons" deployed against the righteous, or comparing one's campaign fundraising to the miracle of loaves and fishes?

Would Jesus hire Ed Rollins?

I am always surprised when members of the Daily Kos get on the wrong web site. Of course if Hill were to drop out there would be more room for Huck on that website.

To me, any of the leading Republican candidates are better than all of the Democratic candidates combined. I was voting years before every hearing Rush, and he will not influence my vote now.

I do appreciate Rush's contribution to the political dialog, but I would vote for the Republican candidate whom I think would nominate the best conservative, constitutionally founded, federal judges.

In any event, if Mike becomes the nominee, he will get my vote. The voting public has a tendency to stick it to the all knowing national pundits, including Rush.

If Mike does become the nominee and Rush continues to deride him, then Rush can kiss my ass.

He’s a populist

And that's bad?

Great point! It really interesting/ironic to me that Huckabee is criticized as a populist while simultaneously being criticized for being soft on immigration, crime and taxes. Historically, Populists have never been pro-immigration and taxes or soft on crime.

I wish Huckabee was really as anti-establishment as the establishment is anti-Huckabee :-)

Acceptable: Huckabee, Hunter and Paul (alphabetical order)

“The Huckster with all his warts is still far and wide a better choice for POTUS than any one of the Democrat candidates”

This though gives me an absolute brain cramp. I hope the Huck-wanna be POTUS doesn’t do a Ross Perot on us.

Choosing between Pastor Huck and Mrs. Slick Willie is like choosing between being given the choice of choosing between Twinkies and Ding-Dongs, they both will ultimately be recalled for overdosing our Country with too much of what they think is a good thing....illegal aliens or communist doctrine...geez I can’t choose.

BTW, where exactly are these warts? I think I know where Mz. Clinton’s are, probably a gift from the hubby.

I don't think so... there might be some damage, but anyone avidly listening to Rush would probably not be voting for Huck anyway.

I'd bet that a larger percentage of Huckabee's supporters are Rush listeners/lovers than those of any other single candidate. Rush has no "mind-numbed" robots.

Acceptable Candidates: Huckabee, Hunter and Paul (Alphabetical Order)

Are you an absolutist? Is it possible to enjoy his show from time to time, and realize that his thinking matches mine a great deal of the time, and not “worship” him?

populist:

noun: an advocate of democratic principles [syn: democrat]

I hope this clarifies the meaning of the word for everyone here.

I can accept that as long as you recognize that (d)emocrat does not equal (D)emocrat.

It means a BIG D. Mr. Huckabee is running in the wrong party. Didn’t Rush point that out yesterday for everyone?

Are you saying the GOP hasn’t been pro-life and opposed to the homosexual agenda for years? Where have you been?

The Evangelicals will not vote for Mitt, even in the general election.

I didn't realize you are CINC Evangelical, and that all the rest of us must take orders from you.

Odd that you claim Evangelicals would rather have a raging atheist as President, working hard to assault any God-fearing person, than vote for someone who agrees with us on many POLITICAL issues, and at leasts acknowledges that there is a God.

POPULISM: The representation or extolling of the common person, the underdog, etc.; philosophies that offer unorthodox solutions or policies and appeal to the common person rather than according with traditional party or partisan ideologies.

Perhaps a more detailed definition of populism is: the false flattery of the common person, suggesting that he has more wisdom and knowledge of specific issues than those who have devoted their lives to studying those issues; a philosophy that offers solutions that sound good unless you understand how the details will cause failure; a politics of the Great Leader who Cannot Be Criticized, since He Alone cares about the Little People.

Populism is used by hucksters who pretend to offer power to the 'little guy' - who claim that once elected, they will 'fight for the little guy' - when what the little guy needs to become a big guy is freedom, opportunity, hard work and initiative. And populists who gain power have a long track record of doing nothing but oppressing the very people they claim to care about!

And frankly, the reason so many people ARE 'little people' is that they lack those characteristics!

allow Rush Limbaugh to do their thinking for them.

This is where you are so wrong in your thinking about Rush. Years ago, when Rush was in Sacramento, he was the only voice on the radio that was actually saying, out loud, what we were thinking. Thus, an audience was born!

Rush says what we say in our living rooms so he is not thinking FOR us, he is just voicing OUR thoughts.

sort of creepy that they put a dog in the family photo when one of those boys tortured and hung a dog when the boy was 17 (and daddy stopped any prosecution of the incident). I cringe every time I see that picture!

Jack Kemp is not a populist — he is a conservative who wants to empower people (i.e., Empower America). There’s a difference.

Would Evangelicals vote for Joe Liberman?

He is Jewish, so I assume that makes him unqualified to be President of the United States.

What about a Jehovah’s Witness as President. Would we need to be certain he’s part of the 144 destined for eternity?

One thing I would like to be enlightened on regarding the Southern Baptist faith. I had a friend once who was Baptist and I was told unless I was a Baptist and subscribed to the Baptist teachings I was destined for Hell. Being a Believer and Christian of another denomination didn’t count.

BTW, should all candidates shave their heads so we know they don’t possess the demonic triple 6’s? /sarcasm off.

Why are all he blinds closed on the second floor of their house. Pretty weird!

At least I guess we get the visual message that the Huck and the boys want to appeal to the “blue collar” workers.

Didn’t know that one of the boys killed and hung a dog at 17. Pretty damaging information. That’s a serious crime. I believe Michael Vick is sitting in a cell for doing a similar act. Wonder if the kid is into dog fighting. Maybe MOM is the ring leader, looks like she’s got a pretty firm grip on the pup’s neck.
