Theres not a small number of people who dont trust banks and keep their money in the mattress, so to speak. Every now and then we hear about the house where they find stashed savings after the homeowners death. I even considered it myself after $100 increments were literally disappearing from a checking account I had some years ago. I am quite convinced someone was embezzling. I changed banks after I couldnt get the bank to believe it wasnt me forgetting about money I spent. Amazingly it didnt occur at the new bank, and it wasnt because my memory suddenly improved.
Mice. My brother managed a branch bank and told me the story of a mouse that got into this one guy's checking account and it would eat about three or four dollars every day. Every month the guy complained he was short in his account. My brother couldn't figure out how the money kept disappearing. Finally, he put a trap in the guy's account, caught the mouse and there was never a problem again.
