ARMOR: Quick and Cheap Defense Against EFP
Strategy Page ^ | 2007 Dec 20

December 19, 2007: An Israeli firm has devised a bolt-on reactive (exploding) armor panels for trucks, that will provide protection from EFP (Explosively Formed Projectiles). These are the precision weapons that have been coming from Iran. An EFP is a precision weapon, not an ad-hoc assemblage of explosives (like most roadside bombs). Your typical EFP is a cylindrical device, the optimal one often described as similar to a coffee can. But the cylinder metal must be thicker. You fill about 60 percent of the "coffee can" with explosives (C4, also known as plastique, will do). Then you insert a detonator on the closed end of the "coffee can" and a concave copper plug that is pushed into the plastic explosive. The tricky part here is that the depth of the concave copper part, and the thickness of the copper, have to be just right. It requires someone expert at math and the chemistry of explosives to make those calculations. You can make a mould for casting the copper plug, but you must make sure you get the thickness just so, or the weapon won't work.

You set the device off with the detonator, either via wire, or wireless, connection. When the C4 explodes, it forms the copper cap into a blob of molten metal, moving faster than a speeding bullet (about 1,500 meters a second). The blob stays intact, and lethal, for a few hundred meters, traveling pretty much in a straight line. But not straight enough to hit something more than fifty or so dozen meters away. The Israeli protection system uses the explosion of the reactive armor to break up the blob, making it largely ineffective against armor.

Box formations of various B’s and a few months of day/night carpet bombing of every urban center would also fix the problem of Iran supplying our enemy during a time of war.

Some day, we’re gonna have to start treating our enemy as an enemy and quit with all the cutsie poo nice guy crap. That schtick has gained us exactly squat so far.

Folks who can’t play nice out of basic human decency need to be given reason to fear.

I’d prefer to utterly destroy every facet of Iran’s military capability, starting with their “navy” and then every other military asset, paying particular attention to air assets, CIC capabilities, and missile production and deployment assets.

Collateral damage to civilian facilities would be minimized if possible, but not at the expense of accomplishing the mission efficiently.

Isn't this what the last Clinton administration did to us???

We had reactive armor on our M60 Tanks years ago.

"Folks who can’t play nice out of basic human decency need to be given reason to fear."

Difficult to do with a people whose 'god' rewards brutalizing and slaying innocents. Much moreso with a people who really do love death more than life, as Bin Laden once said. What fear has anyone who is suicidal to begin with?

Karma must be instant and effective enough to create that fear, and the perp must not be allowed to die without first realizing and experiencing that fear until it descends into the deepest recesses of their psyche, otherwise it could not serve as example, preventing further terrorism by causing the rest of the cult to re-consider their decisions to murder.

A realm of thought that very few normal people have the capacity to enter. A think tank to solve this is needed.

This piece is fraught with technical errors...starting with “molten blob”. EFPs do not form a plasma jet, like shaped charges do.

Got into a technical disagreement with a buddy of mine while we were discussing plater vs shaped vs EFPs. We were splitting hairs so fine we almost came to blows.

Hear! Hear!
It’s well past the time for us to realize that we are engaged in a religious war with martyrdom-seeking zealots for whom death is preferred to life. Islam has been engaged in an endless jihad since they got pushed back East of Turkey.
Over a billion adherents around the world, and no significant portion of them seeking peaceful coexistence with ANY other belief system. Islam is, in truth, less a religion than it is a cult, IMO. Its strict interpretation of the Koran, and its subservience to annointed imams and such, with their violent, seventh-century interpretations of Koranic law are wearing very thin in many parts of the world. The leadership of CAIR declares that Islam is not on the earth to be equal to any other religion, but to be the supreme and only religion and that Shari’a law should be the only law...I’d say that pretty well sums it up.
The slow oozing of Islam into Europe and elsewhere, with absolutely NO interest in social assimilation clearly defines their aims and goals.

This has been going on, in varying degrees, for some 1400 years. It’s time to put an end to it; decisively. We have the means, but I question whether the free world yet has the will. With so many socialists and liberals in charge of things around the world, I think we have reason to be concerned. Time for change...

I would have to see it work. Usually in a shapped charge, the slug follows the explosive jet in. I have see them stuck half way through the hole.

Some day our enemy will make it impossible to not treat it as an enemy. By then the resulting fireworks will be far more damaging to the US at home and abroad than if we had just taken care of business much earlier.

Before all is said and done, the world may be made to realize that most Americans are only nice by choice, not by necessity.

Those working to keep the current status quo of a weakly responding US to foreign aggression are, purposely or not, working toward ensuring an eventual elimination of everyone associated with that threat, be that association direct or oblique.

The more pressure is applied to check our natural tendency to confront a threat, the greater the reaction to the threat will be once the rage breaks and the restraining pressure is fully removed.

We, here in the US, also need to get our minds around the reality that western europe is not, nor has ever actually been, our friend. Traditionally, it is where our soldiers went to die for other peoples’ inability to take care of their own business.

There is zero value in attempting to appease or play to the desires of europe to any degree what so ever.

When it finally comes time to break loose and start dealing in true retribution, western europe may well be as much on the receiving end as any other place or people on this planet.

The friends of our enemy are our enemy. Those who preach hatred of us are not our friends. Those who wish us harm deserve destruction.

Does that mean we have to bomb the Liberals in America?

I doubt bombing would be required in a local domestic response to our enemy. Most of those would fold up into soggy bags of quivering snivel if met with even an iota of concerted pushback by seriously intentioned clue bat wielders.

But seriously, I am one of those that does believe we’re in pretty much the sort of political/cultural war place we’ve been in prior to both of our previous brother on brother conflagrations.
