They last longer. They burn cooler. They save money over the long run.
However the government should not ban ordinary bulbs because the compact fluorescents: don’t work in all fixtures, don’t work in refrigerators and stoves, can’t be found in night light sizes, burn out with a spark, smoke, and sparks.

Actually, I have heard that this is a design feature, when chemicals on the filament are used up the lamp is designed to burn out some simple fuselike part of the ballast. Otherwise the lamp might heat up until the glass cracks.
Of course, anybody will be nervous when smelling smoke. This part of the design needs some improvement.
