"BCE" and "CE" originated with Jews, not atheists.

Why would Jews use "Before Christian Era" and "Christian Era" in assigning dates?

BCE and CE are Common Era, not Christian Era.

We don’t. BCE is understood to mean “before the common era” and CE means Common Era. Anno Domini isn’t a comfortable phrase for those of us who don’t recognize Jesus as Dominus (or the Son of Dominus), and of course we’re equally uncomfortable with Before Christ inasmuch as the latter word means Messiah in Greek.
