The U.N. General Assembly adopted a moratorium on the death penalty yesterday, overcoming opposition from America, China, and others that argued each nation should be able to choose how to combat crime.
The 10454 vote for suspending executions is not legally binding but represents a growing global trend against a punishment that many countries say undermines human rights, is a questionable deterrent and mistakenly has killed innocent people.
"There is no conclusive evidence of the death penalty's deterrence value and that any miscarriage or failure of justice in the death penalty's implementation is irreversible and irreparable," the proponents said in the resolution adopted by the 192-nation assembly. There were 29 abstentions.
Attempts in 1994 and 1999 to have the General Assembly adopt a moratorium on the death penalty failed. But since then, the number of countries that have abolished capital punishment in law or practice has grown to 133, according to Amnesty International.
"Today's vote represents a bold step by the international community," Secretary-General Ban said. "This is further evidence of a trend towards ultimately abolishing the death penalty."

It’s really time to send these idiots packing.
Killing criminals after a trial manages to get the attention of the U.N., but killing your own citizens garners barely a whimper there and will probably get your ambassadors on prestigious committee seats.
Except 100% of those put to death never commit another crime.
Slavery, terrorism, & extortion remain A-OK to the UN.
Actually, we have no business punishing one person to impact the behavior of another. The death penalty is the appropriate punishment for murderers.
LOL!! After escaping from multiple jails in different states, Ted Bundy came to Florida.
He will never savagely murder our children again
Yet more reason we do not want the UN running the world.
So, if death is no deterrent then what kind of deterrent is 3 squares a day and a warm room?
Is the deterrent concept a thing of the past? Are we now supposed to provide incentives and positive reinforcement for people who see no value in life and the laws of society?
Yep.
You kill someone (or more than one) and it's proven in a court of law, with the appropriate appeals etc., then you forfeit your right to live.
So?
So? The UN wants us to eliminate the death penalty?
Meanwhile back at the execution chamber: NEXT!
So....it’s time to give the UN the death penalty...
New Jersey going world-wide?
I can live without the death penalty, if the alternative makes the perp WISH for death. My proposed solution is spelled out in my FReeper profile.
Blankets?
You’re too kind.
