the story might make more sense if you had posted the amount of words allowed as an excerpt. The man also had head injuries and we have no idea how severe they are:
Paulo Melo, 29, has been on life support at Royal Darwin Hospital after his spinal cord was severed and he sustained head injuries in a car crash two weeks ago.
His family was told earlier this week that life support should be removed after more than 20 specialists agreed he would not recover.

John Graziano has similar injuries but he is receiving care at the Haley VA Center in Tampa, Florida. He can now open his eyes. He was in a coma since August after a bad accident with Hulk Hogan's son Nick Bollea.
Graziano's parents never gave up on Graziano, a young Marine who served more than one tour of duty in Iraq.
Taking someone off of a ventilator after two weeks in a coma is a rush to judgment. Was organ donation involved as well? Sometimes they'll end a life to do expensive operations and drug protocols for organ recipients.
