Huckabee on Christ Ad Brouhaha: 'Paul is Dead'

December 18, 2007 3:07 PM

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Governor Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., had some fun Tuesday answering a question about a brewing controversy over his latest TV ad called "What Really Matters."

Huckabee is running a Christmas ad in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina where the former Baptist minister invokes Jesus Christ -- the first 2008 Republican candidate to do so in a campaign ad.

In the ad Huckabee says that that at this time of year, "what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and our friends."

Some have suggested there is an image of a cross behind Huckabee's shoulder as he talks to the camera in the ad, but Huckabee dismissed that Tuesday.

"That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf," Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas.

Huckabee was asked if his language crossed the line between faith and politics: "Absolutely not," he said.

Huckabee went on to joke, to the delight of the reporters in the room, "I will confess this; if you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead, Paul is dead, Paul is dead.'"

The Republican candidate likened the dissection of his Christmas campaign ad to rumors that Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash at the height of the Beatles popularity and replaced by a doppelganger, and that subtle clues were placed inside the group's music for years to come.

Don’t care for the Huckster, but that is downright funny.
Maybe he can get a job writing for Leno/O’Brien/Kimmel.

If you're gonna quote backwards music, at least get the quote right. It's, "Paul is a dead man." (Sounds more like, "Paul is a dead mon.

No, it's "turn me on, dead man."

For some reason, Salem Communications is out to destroy Huckabee. Like you, he’s not my candidate of choice. But their efforts seem orchestrated.

I will say this for Huckabee. He is at ease with himself, and he has returned Christ to Christmas. I disagree with him politically, but these things cant be denied.

I guess I have to disagree. This was not an "our family to yours" Christmas message or greeting. It was a political ad.

Why did it look more like a message from a pastor than a Christmas greeting? Where is his family? Why use cross symbolism using a bookcase without the actual cross if you are going to do it all?

Aside from the fact that he uttered the words, is he really returning Christ to Christmas or just using Christ as his limo driver to the White House?

Dictionary -— Subliminal:
1. Below the threshold of conscious perception. Used of stimuli.
2. Inadequate to produce conscious awareness but able to evoke a response: subliminal propaganda.

And that is what you're gonna hang your hat on...

He is at ease with himself, and he has returned Christ to Christmas.

If he was so comfortable with himself and forthright, he would have used a real cross instead of relying on a cheap trick, and he would not be denying the obvious now.

But Huckabee is only willing to use a cross if he gives himself an escape hatch to use, by saying that it is only a bookshelf. It seems that somebody who is willing to stand up for Christ and Christmas should have more courage than that.

No conservative should object to a Merry Christmas message.

Wrong.

I object to him (or anyone else) using religion as a primary cause for political support.

And with that Bluegold, I agree...

No I don’t wear a hat but so many Christians have hung their hats on leaders with NO morals/values. I doubt a moral candidate could stand a chance with wide awake/conscious people looking for subliminal/hidden messages. Maybe it is too late because I don’t see very many Christians who love, lift up, or forgive each other.

A Christian is NOT like wearing a hat, something that can be put on and off. Being a Christian is who I am and that part of Huckabee I understand.

As a Christian, I would expect Mike Huckabee to be straightforward and truthful in his public pronouncements about Christ. Instead he uses a subtle and “accidental” element to symbolize the Cross, and then denies what he has done. Then he denies it again. Then he denies it again.

I don’t know how well you think you understand Mike Huckabee, but I respectfully suggest that you look again. He is exploiting the symbols your faith for political gain, and then lying to you about it. You may feel happy and comforted to hear kind and supportive words out of his mouth, when your faith seems to be under attack in so many quarters, but step back and look at what he has done, and how he is lying about it now.

Before you hitch your wagon to Mike Huckabee, realize he is going to do this sort of cheap and manipulative stunt over and over again, and he is going to lie about it over and over again. How do you think that is going to work out over the long haul? Is that going to lead people to Christ, or are people going to become cynical as it becomes clear that Mike Huckabee is a manipulative huckster? Is the glory of Christ going to be revealed to the World by people of good faith like yourself speaking to your neighbor and bringing forth the Good News, or by a slick operator like Mike Huckabee exploiting the symbols of your faith for cheap political gain and then lying about it, over and over again, before the next day dawns?

Think about it. Is that going to harden the heart of the next person you talk to about Jesus?

So, you don’t mind his using the cross as a prop, and then lying about it?

Do you believe it’s just a “coincidence?” If so, I have a bridge to sell you.

If you think it’s intentional, then he’s a damn liar, and it bothers me when supposed preachers LIE, but it takes my breath away when they lie about the cross.

Doesn’t this lying about the cross disturb you at all?

You still won’t answer my question.

Does Huck’s LYING ABOUT USING THE CROSS DISTURB YOU?

Yes, or no.

I will say this for Huckabee. He is at ease with himself, and he has returned Christ to Christmas.

Oh really? If he is at ease with himself etc, then why not ADMIT the cross use was purposeful?

Why does someone "at ease with himself" LIE about using the cross?

Does it disturb you then, that he seems to be quite at ease with LYING ABOUT USING THE CROSSS?

Yep -- the Huckster is clever by half too much... for the Huckster to suggest the presence of the cross image was unintended and simply a bookcase perfectly but unintentionally positioned and manipulated to appear in perfect conjunction with his angelic face and Christian greeting for Christmas -- would be laughable, if it didn't reveal the contempt the lying *&^(*&*&(*& has for the truth and the voters... I pray this nation wakes up, and sees this charlatan for the low life, opportunistic, lying, blasphemous, self serving snake oil peddler from Arkansas in the mold of the Clintons that he most assuredly is...

They say the Huckster is a smart politician. Then he must calculate that the average member of his voter base is a total moron, that will swallow his hogwash about this cynical manipulation of the cross being an accident. If he's correct about this average stupidity, we're doomed.
