Huckabee on Christ Ad Brouhaha: 'Paul is Dead'

December 18, 2007 3:07 PM

ABC News' Kevin Chupka Reports: Former Governor Mike Huckabee, R-Ark., had some fun Tuesday answering a question about a brewing controversy over his latest TV ad called "What Really Matters."

Huckabee is running a Christmas ad in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina where the former Baptist minister invokes Jesus Christ -- the first 2008 Republican candidate to do so in a campaign ad.

In the ad Huckabee says that that at this time of year, "what really matters is the celebration of the birth of Christ and being with our family and our friends."

Some have suggested there is an image of a cross behind Huckabee's shoulder as he talks to the camera in the ad, but Huckabee dismissed that Tuesday.

"That was a book shelf behind me, a book shelf," Huckabee told reporters while campaigning in Houston, Texas.

Huckabee was asked if his language crossed the line between faith and politics: "Absolutely not," he said.

Huckabee went on to joke, to the delight of the reporters in the room, "I will confess this; if you play the spot backwards it says 'Paul is dead, Paul is dead, Paul is dead.'"

The Republican candidate likened the dissection of his Christmas campaign ad to rumors that Paul McCartney was killed in a car crash at the height of the Beatles popularity and replaced by a doppelganger, and that subtle clues were placed inside the group's music for years to come.

It’s not stupid to point out that he is obviously LYING about not noticing the cross effect, and pretending it “just happened.”

I’m fine with the cross, if he would admit it was carefully crafted, down to the spotlight and the moving camera on a track.

But real men of the Bible don’t LIE like this.

Phony baloney Elmer Gantrys do.

Has Donahue declared for the Presidency? Did I miss that?

You will note that of all the people on this morning's thread who have criticized Huckabee for using a subliminal cross in his ad, not one has criticized him for using the word "Christmas" or mentioning Christ. We are criticizing him for being a manipulator. His pretending that the criticism of this ad is over his use of the word "Christmas" is yet another manipulative dodge.

It looks like he is going to try to boldface his way through this. Good luck with that, Huck.

As for me, this is a Dean Scream. This is a Sistah Souljah. This is a Reporting for Duty. Sometimes a candidate does something that completely describes his flaws in complete and accurate detail. This little snarky reply of his sets Huckabee in stone, as far as I am concerned, as a manipulative, condescending, holier-than-though hack, who is willing to abuse religion for cheap political gain at the drop of a hat.

If it comes down to Huckabee and Hillary! in the General Election, it will not be automatic for me. If it is between Huckabee and almost anybody else, I will pull the (D) lever without a second thought.

Huck has great wit and employs it deftly. I also think his ad is politically brilliant, BRILLIANT!

I say kudos to him for being bold for Christ.

If he were bold for Christ, he wouldn't rely on a subliminal device to insert a cross in his ad.

If he were bold for Christ, he would not deny what he had intentionally done three times before the cock crows.

He is a sneaky little weasel, and I suspect he is a sneaky little weasel for himself, and not for Christ.

Real men of the Bible don’t tell bold-faced lies like that. Phony Elmer Gantry preachermen do.

Essentially he's denying Christ at the same time he's invoking him. Hucklebee has a way of looking at the camera like he's looking at you to see if you're on to him. It's a little like Jon Lovitz' famous pathological liar. Some would say he's just kind of winking at you, I say he's seeing how far he can go.

Ugh. This fellow really makes me want to vomit. One day everyone will acknowledge what a tool he is, like Perot. But right now people have to take him serious. Ly.

Does anyone have definitive proof of this bookcase being staged?.

I loved Hucks slap of Paul over this:

Asked about the ad today, Ron Paul decried Huckabee’s religious iconography with his own veiled reference on Fox and Friends:

“It reminds me of what Sinclair Lewis once said. He says, ‘when fascism comes to this country, it will be wrapped in the flag, carrying a cross.’ Now I don’t know whether that’s a fair assessment or not, but you wonder about using a cross, like he is the only Christian or implying that subtly. So, I don’t think I would ever use anything like that.”

Thats all this thread was about to me.
Huckabee’s response was brilliant.

“but would the supposed conservatives on this site STOP playing the old liberal game of “any republican is a stupid republican”...”any Southerner is stupid” and “all Christian are dunces”

I’ve seen no evidence of that at all. That type of statement is exactly what the Huckster is using as his strategy. If you don’t like me, you are attacking my religion. Some of us are too smart to fall for that. Just like Chertoff saying if conservatives were against shamnesty, they are racists. That didn’t play well here either.

Wow, can it get any lower than the Huckster using the birth of Jesus Christ as a campaign prop?
Even Miller Brewing Company was more subtle.

We agree, it's brilliant.

Do you mind this alleged preacher's LYING about it?

Does anyone else find it really stupid that people are accusing him of putting subliminal Christian messages in a tv spot where he speaks about Christ explicitly?

No kidding. I mean, this is the guy who has "CHRISTIAN LEADER" in big letters on his commercial. He doesn't need to have any subliminal religious message, the religious message is overt and right in your face.

You've got it nailed. He's purposefully using the cross as a prop, at the same time denying that he did.

Lying about THE CROSS! That's about as low as one can go.

That's why I post these reflections of the Huckster's essential character:
