A 10-year-old Florida girl faces felony weapons charges after bringing a small steak knife to school to cut up her lunch, according to a report on WFTV.com.

School officials say the Ocala 5th grader had brought a piece of steak for her lunch, and had brought a steak knife. According to the report, a couple of teachers took the utensil and called authorities, who arrested the girl and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center.

"She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature," explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian, who added that it made no difference what the knife was being used for, they had no choice but to call police.

You should realize just how hard it is to verify that on not-very-user-friendly FR. ;-)

She (and others) can be taught the necessary lesson

They've already been taught the "necessary lesson" ... if they can see. The State is your lord and master, and wants to control every aspect of your life. Bow before the Almighty School District.

The "rule" which she "violated" is chickenshit.

If not for hypersensitive and STUPID school faculty,

The faculty may indeed be idiots, but the real morons are the administrators and their lawyers.

Search for the basics of the article “knife school” and search title by date. It brings up 4 threads on the same topic right at the top.

The search engine is not hard to use if you only provide a little thought.

“Anytime there’s a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don’t want to take any chances, regardless,” Christian said.

Since when is a steak knife classified as a weapon? A steak knife being being used for its intended application is not a weapon - heck a 3 inch thick history book could be a weapon if used to beat someone to death - should we ban those as well?.

Just my 2 cents worth of take on this, but I hearken back to the works of Deep Throat who said, "follow the money."

Why are these teachers so afraid to color outside the lines? Why did the school admin say, "they had no choice?"

In my opinion it all comes down to the body of "professionals" that make money on this. Don't you figure this family will have to hire an attorney now? The parents, and I unfortunately have experience with this, will fork over whatever dollar amount required to get their kid out of jail. Depending in when she was arrested, they may have made her stay in the juvie center for an entire weekend. They will also pay an attorney to make sure her record is cleared or sealed depending on how it all shakes out. Call me a cynic, but shell out a few 10s of thousands of dollars because of some logic free situation and you may come over to the dark side with me as well.

Parents, get your kids out of public schools!

The biggest sin committed here is allowing this girl to eat room-temperature leftover steak - it’s mistreatment of steak - which should be served fresh, hot, and sizzling.

Trust me, I think about it. And it is NOT the best site for forums, period. Including searches of same. If the title doesn’t happen to include those same words, you’re screwed. Try your best, but that’s all that can be asked. With gazillions of posts being made, it’s alot to expect that anyone can ensure 100% they are not duplicating.

What is with putting in a key word you KNOW exists and getting no hits? When does this thing update (if ever)? Never mind what’s the deal with only putting in 4 key words for your own thread, then allegedly others can add key words later - and oftentimes, they don’t take? That’s just 1 aspect. Don’t get me going. FR is sorely lacking in formatting. Hell, I can’t even be in my “state” site of local messages and find any button to go back to even the FR home page!

When you design the perfect forum site, be sure to invite us. I’ve not experienced the problems you describe. But I have made my own mistakes in searching and entering words/keywords.

They used to exist in the old viewable-title fully-threaded formats. Been taken over by the non-threaded full-post types (sort of like this, but better designed). Usually searches are better - and you can also see all at once what has recently been posted, rather than it disappearing down to page 50 in 5 minutes. I rather excuse the latter because FR is a huge site with millions posting.

You’ve not experienced the lack of a way to get back to FR proper from the “state message boards”? There simply is no link to FR from its own state boards. That is a fundamental flaw right there. How that can be overlooked, I don’t know.

The back button in browers has worked well for me. Although normally I just hit the pick button in the address bar; FreeRepublic.com is always near the top for me. It never bothered me that much.

It makes no difference the knife was used to cut food and no crime was committed. Idiots!
