Just one month ago, Mitt Romneys supporters thought that they had Iowa fairly well in hand. But there was Mr. Romney last week, telling several hundred people at a high school cafeteria in Marion that he was the underdog and pleading for their help to keep him from being derailed at the caucuses by the rise of Mike Huckabee.
Youre going to do something which people dont expect, Mr. Romney told them, which is give me a victory.
His campaign is working feverishly to right itself, zeroing in on Mr. Huckabees past moderate record on immigration with critical television advertisements, a mailing and recorded phone calls from a former Arkansas lawmaker who says, I know Mike Huckabees a likable guy, but I also know what he did to our state.
As the Democratic candidates crisscrossed Iowa on Sunday, the Republicans pounded one another, with Mr. Huckabees ascendancy rippling across the field. Mr. Romney demanded that Mr. Huckabee apologize to President Bush for comments he made about the administrations foreign policy, with Mr. Huckabee firing back, while Fred D. Thompson flung the ultimate conservative insult, calling him a liberal. Senator John McCain of Arizona, meanwhile, was gathering endorsements, including one expected Monday from Senator Joseph I. Lieberman of Connecticut, who was on the Democratic presidential ticket in 2000.
The campaign most immediately threatened by Mr. Huckabees rise was that of Mr. Romney. One senior Romney adviser, Ronald C. Kaufman, said of Mr. Huckabees campaign, Am I worried? Of course I am. But, Mr. Kaufman added, At the end of the game, you want the ball in Tom Bradys hands, or the mike in Mitt Romneys hands, and I have faith in our team.

Yeah, right.
“His campaign is working feverishly to right itself, zeroing in on Mr. Huckabees past moderate record...”
From Romney, this is a real hoot!
WTF? Huckabee's record on immigration makes Open Borders Bush look like Tom Tancredo. Romney and Thompson have moderate records on immigration. Only Tancredo and Hunter have great records. The Huckabee and Guilani tag team have pathetic records.
It seems to me that our party will indeed be scrambling if this open-borders, big-government “conservative” is nominated. And that nomination is seeming increasingly possible based upon multiple polls.
That doesn’t say much for Republican voters.
I read another article recently that stated there were plenty of empty seats at most of the Mitt Wit's campaign appearances in Iowa.
He sort of reminds of a has-been rock group struggling to fill seats at a country fair.
This presidential race is getting really bizarre.
They certainly are fabricating it at this point, but I’m worried that they’ll be successful.
Your information on the Huckabee numbers is incorrect.
Why do people attribute everything they disagree with “to the media”?
Fred Thompson is the only other viable candidate to Huckabee, and Fred hasn’t made it easy to vote for himself until very recently.
Could Huck be the answer to their prayers?
Because the media is complicit in perpetuating this fraud on the American people. The two party system.
Think what you will, but there is a reason Huckabee all the sudden began to receive so much attention while real conservative candidates are marginalized.
media air time=poll numbers
Kinda reminds me of when Pat Buchanan won the New Hampshire primary in '96.
Huckabee does a good job connecting with voters. Do you remember when Thompson was leading the polls? All those people became dissapointed with Thompson and have switched support to another socon.
are you kidding? you can't be serious. I suggest you read NYT, Times, Newsweek, BBC, and many other media outlets that are hard left. without exception they all presented articles these past weeks that "glowingly" speak of the Huckster. There is a definite movement in the MSM to minimize anything damaging to the Huckster. Ask yourself why? Just ask yourself, if any "real" conservative said 1/10 what Huck said about gays, it would be non-stop scathing coverage by the MSM. The gay groups would be up in arms. It's funny, I can't remember any gay group making much about Hucks stand.
Huck is a pro-life strong leftist. He would guarantee and Rat win. Huck is the biggest fraud to run to President in modern times.
Gawd almighty.
Huckabee ( pre-gastric bypass ), with his political hero.
I’d ignore Huckabee now. He has already peaked but the polls aren’t showing it yet.
Wait until the Arkansas GOP contingent shows up at some of these events more other candidates.
But I did love the comment from Huckabee when he said that being called a democrat wasn’t all that bad.
Yeah, that doesn’t tell me anything.....
Fred Thompson is the only other viable candidate to Huckabee, and Fred hasnt made it easy to vote for himself until very recently.”

Agreed, totally unimpressed with the field of candidates the GOP has put forth. And, I’m NOT holding my nose and voting Republican “for the good of the party” again.
“Huckabee ( pre-gastric bypass ), with his political hero.”
Good link - this may need to have its own post. There is nothing wrong with privacy concerning medical conditions, but the active denial and deception over such an insignificant matter such as weight loss is just a manifestation of the behavior we could expect in other areas of a Huckabee administration.
