It’s bigger than just NAFTA. Before the USA settled down to more or less its present borders many assumed it would eventually include all of North America, Central America and at least the north of S America. The intent of these early planners was to set up trade routes to China, effectively moving Europe west, which is what Columbus had in mind. The problem then was trade routes to India and China went through those pesky Middle East tribal lands, still about the same as they were then, just plain annoying. The routes to China were the reason for the Panama Canal, for the Lewis-Clark expedition, the Transcontinental Railroad. Now the routes will include the Siberia-Alaska pipeline/railroad right of way. All for trade with China/India while bypassing murderous thugs. Pres Jefferson was indeed one of these planners.
