WASHINGTON, (AP) -- President Bush on Wednesday signed into law a five-year renewal of Head Start, the federal preschool program for poor children.

The latest update to Head Start, which began in 1965, aims to open the program to more children and ensure that teachers are better-qualified. Congress overwhelmingly approved the legislation last month, and Bush signed it despite misgivings about aspects of the bill.

Bush praised the bill's push to increase competition among Head Start providers, raise learning standards and coordinate early childhood education.

George W. Bush loves federal spending —— big government Republicanism and social engineering.

I was just on another thread, where I said I supported secured borders, and a dramatic reduction in the size of government, and I was asked if I was a "neo-nazi"...

We're surrounded by traitors in my opinion.

Bush`s policy agenda has been for bigger government and under his leadership the GOP has been shifting more leftward. Just look at the amount of liberals and moderates running for the GOP nomination this time around. The front runner is a full fledged liberal. No doubt about it. The GOP has lost its way and Republicans have abandoned conservatism in favor of more liberalism. No thanks.

The Big Government scum machine just can’t wait to gets its filthy paws on toddlers so the indoctrination can begin. This stuff makes decent humans want to throw up until they’re dry heaving. How long before the Massachusetts model (”Fisting for Third-Graders”) is the national norm?

I agree that Bush is too liberal. He should have vetoed the No Child Left Behind Act because it violates the 10th Amendment. His budgets have increased spending more than Clinton’s. In 2004, the Depts. of Education, HUD, HHS, and Energy received at least 20% more than they received in 2001.

my experience led me to believe it was just government babysitting for brats.

That's why Pres. Bush wanted some testing to be part of Head Start, so it would be more educationally developmental and not so much baby-sitting. He has to choose his battles and has done quite a good job on those that are most important to the nation.

I used to take my little children to the park with their sand toys, and the Head Start children from the neighboring preschool would come to the park and play and descend on the toys like hungry locusts.

I felt sorry for them. All this wasteful government spending, billions of dollars or whatever, and they can’t spare some for some $.99 Wal-Mart shovels?

Only the ‘leadership’ have abandoned the principles, so it’s time to throw the RINO pirate leaders overboard, not abandon the Party and Principles. We must stick together.

Not much of a budget for toys...Much of those program dollars go into payroll for staff—a built-in source for rewarding (D) voters—and for textbooks, the publishers of which just might be willing to contribute to campaigns to keep incumbents in office—and other vendors who do likewise, know (earmarkwise) what I mean?

I’d call it glorified babysitting but it’s mostly shamefied.

And yet, there are wonderful people doing wonderful things within this post-fetal factory farming environment. (Imagine what they could do in a vouchered, entrepreneurial environment. Especially as regards CHARACTER education!)
