The ringleader of the self-described Christians involved in this subway attack is an individual who was convicted of aggravated assault in a previous incident, and was waiting to serve a six-month custodial sentence before he got invovled in this little dustup. He's a thug.

The usual reason is that such individuals who have a good lawyer and parents willing to put up money for him can have him out on remand to "get his affairs in order" before he goes into the can.

Hence my sympathy for his parents - they have bent over backward to save him from himself and he keeps slapping them in the face.
