Romney: Attacks on Religion Go Too Far
Las Vegas Sun ^ | 12 Dec 07 | Glen Johnson

Republican Mitt Romney retorted to questions about his faith by surging rival Mike Huckabee on Wednesday, declaring that "attacking someone's religion is really going too far."

In an article to be published Sunday in The New York Times, Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

Then answer the question about Moonism:

Are the Moonies a Cult?

If so, what makes them one?

***It really is unfortunate that the Huckabigots are interested only in supporting another evangelical and bashing a Mormon.***

Evangelical Christians are bigots because they don’t want to have what they view as a cult member President??? Why not call people bigots for not wanting a Scientiologist President; or a Muslim? Makes about as much sense.

My dislike for Huckabee grows every time he opens his mouth. These men are running for the presidency of the United States, not for some theological contest to determine who is or isn't a Christian. Such questions aren't germane to a presidential race and it says nothing good about Huckabee that he poses them anyway.

Huckabee does not have a degree in theology. He has a master of divinity from Southwest Baptist Seminary. As a holder of an MDiv, I can tell you that it’s a training program to be a pastor. In his case, in the baptist denomination. (In my case, the Methodist denomination.) In my MDiv we never once discussed Mormonism. Ever.

OK so we'll just have to assume that he's ignorant and hasn't bothered to do some basic research on the Church of Latter Day Saints after all these months of them being in the news. I wonder if he mixes up Iraq and Iran too. ;-) Like I said, I think Huckabee's motivation was very clear and it had nothing to do with educating people. But don't you wish he hadn't said what he said? Then you wouldn't have to carry water for a foolish gaff that obviously enlightened no one. Perhaps Huckabee might now enlighten his flock about the answer to his question?

We are talking about bashing another religion not the candidate, to ignore that is also maligning all members and can be taken as though you think all member are painted with the same brush.

It would be appreciated if posters would please try to stay on topic of the thread if that was is your intend!

What is the difference in Baptist and Methodist? No I really do not know. I know even less about the Mormon religion.

He said it for one reason, to spread disinformation and divisiveness.

How is the question disinformation?

Divisiveness? How do you get that?

Hey when are Baptists going to stand up for their faith? Make sense? Not to me either.

I have yet to see Huckabee run away from his faith. It is one the qualities in him I find admirable. A President should know what he believes in and why.

Who cares. What is the Moony candidate's position on the Constitution?

I wouldn't call it 'too far'. I'd call it totally out of line.

If Huck wants to run for President, he should stick with the issues. If he wants to criticize other faiths, he should drop out of the race.

Yeah yeah Charles, you just keep adding the missing "Children" phrase that you always try to add so that You can pretend that this clip didn't refer to the scoutmaster issue that was a hot topic in Massachusetts when the question was asked. You keep trying to add words so that Members only reffers to the children. Those words weren't there in the question, weren't there in the answer, and ignores the context of why a reporterette would pose the question in 1994.

Whether its from candidates, the MSM or other religious types like Dobson.

Although I think it is stupid (except in extreme cases, like if someone were a wahabi muslim), individuals are free to question a candidate's fitness for office based on religion if they want. The candidates, however, should stick to the issues. Huck is out of line.

“Does it bother you that Obama’s father was a muslim and Obama attended a muslim school when he was young?”.

Obama’s liberation theology is both political and dangerous, no matter what his Muslim background is. Everyone should be concerned about Obama’s religion, and we should push him, his minister, and his wife to give some truthful answers.

How does this question "bash" Mormonism? If it is a belief of this faith why not say so?

That was a dodge.

Wrong. That was the whole point... and you know it. And speaking of dodges, you never answered my question about what you truly believe Huckabee's motivations were (maybe I missed it). I was going to let it slide but since you brought up dodging...

Not now, but there were plenty of massacres by Mormons in the past. If things get bad, there might be in the future.
