"Waterboarding involves wrapping plastic or fabric around a detainee's face then pouring water over the top until it is forced up the nose and down the throat to simulate drowning."

This is confusing to me. If the face is covered then how does water get into the nose and mouth? Just how much of the face is covered? And if the water does get down the nose and mouth, then why cover the face?

Imagine taking a ziploc sandwich bag, placing it in someone's mouth when they are on an upside down incline, and then running a strong stream of water into the bag.

It will feel like your mouth is filling up with water and when you are upside down the water will flow from the bag into your nostrils even though gravity will prevent the water in your nostrils from flowing up into your lungs.
