Tell us, Fred Thompson, about your national security policy.
"The good guys win and the bad guys lose -- how 'bout that?"
Profound. And your economic policy?
"Free people, free markets, doin' free things together."
Well said. Do you worry that tax cuts might cause lost revenue?
"It ain't lost, it's in my pocket."
As for how he came to hold certain views on health care, he has this answer for his audience in Anderson, S.C.: "I had a conversation with my little mama back in Franklin, Tennessee."
His 87-year-old mother's advice also persuades him to reject the new National Intelligence Estimate reporting that Iran has suspended its nuclear program. "Remember whatcha mama told ya," the former senator from Tennessee recommends. "If somethin' appears to be too good to be true, it probably is."
Is it possible to be too folksy? Thompson seems determined to find out. The big man with all those Hollywood roles is trying to slow-drawl his way to the GOP nomination. To the extent that Thompson has a pitch, it's that he doesn't change his views like, say, Mitt Romney or Rudy Giuliani. "Where I stand does not depend on where I'm standing or what political office I happen to be running for," he asserts.
Mostly, though, he's recommending himself to voters as a good ol' boy.
"Y'all know where a man can get a decent meal in this town?" he asks the crowd at Mama Penn's Real Southern Cooking, next door to the "$5 Christian Bookstore" and a few blocks from the Baptist church with the drive-through Nativity scene. "I'm a Tennessee boy. I consider this my neck of the woods and I hope South Carolinians think this is my neck of the woods, too." The last part he pronounces "mah neck-uh-da woods."

Elitest just don’t get real folk.
True. But, we need more of this though, so his message starts to get out. The general public will “get it”.
I see Dana Milbank on anything, I just drive on by.
My husband amuses himself baiting people like that, seeing how many impossibilities he can get them to believe.
“I’m a Tennessee boy. I consider this my neck of the woods and I hope South Carolinians think this is my neck of the woods, too.” The last part he pronounces “mah neck-uh-da woods.”
I assume they are trying to imply that Fred is some sort of fake.
Fred is as real as it gets. Its about time someone has the guts to speak his mind with the American people.
Fred has not yet said. I ain’t no ways tired. Hillary’s honest dialouge.
“The drive-by media just doesn’t get Fred.”
Or maybe they do, but it irritates them that his folksy style is appealing when he gets to show it.
And how does Dana Milbank pronounce it?
I’m really liking Fred more and more everyday. Elites just can’t comprehend the country way. Simple fact is that country folk can be much wiser to the world than they will ever be given credit for, but the elites are so convinced that you must be stupid if you’re country that they will never even take the time to listen. Anyone who doesn’t try to impress me with their ability to mealy-mouth a subject gets my attention every time.
Fred has some good enemies. Wadaya say we keep-um?
Well, of course he is! He's a highly educated, sophisticated Washingtonian who's been to all kinds of fancy places you and I can't even pronounce, much less imagine. He's just ever so much smarter than people who speak with a Southern accent and listen their mamas. Don't you know that? /s
The first question on national security was answered almost exactly the same way that Ronald Reagan answered it-—when he said, “We win, they lose” (to that same question posed by Richard Allen).
They are so very affraid of him....why won’t they engage him on substance? He has written plans and statements on most all of the major issues but they play these games...why do you think that’s true?
ping
I imagine with a sneering nasal twang
Wonder why Milbank hasn’t ask him who the new leader of Australia is? He seems to be as contemptous of Thompson as he was/is of Bush.
