WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is attacking Mike Huckabee on his record of illegal immigration in a new TV ad, a move the latter labeled as "desperate."
Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is upping the attacks on Mike Huckabee's immigration record.
Romney, who has lost his front-runner status in polls to Huckabee in Iowa, plans to air the ad on the issue he views as one of his rival's biggest vulnerabilities.
Iowa stations will begin broadcasting the spot, which attacks Huckabee by name, on Tuesday.
The Romney ad, titled "The Record," compares the candidates' conservative stands on social issues but draws a sharp contrast on their track records on immigration policy: "Mitt Romney stood up and vetoed in-state tuition for illegal aliens ... opposed driver's licenses for illegals," the ad's announcer says. "Mike Huckabee? Supported in-state tuition benefits for illegal immigrants. Huckabee even supported taxpayer-funded scholarships for illegal aliens. Watch the Romney ad »
"On immigration, the choice matters," the announcer says.

DEMS HOLD FIRE ON HUCKABEE; SEE 'EASY KILL' IN GENERAL ELECTION

Democrat party officials are avoiding any and all criticism of Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, insiders reveal.
The Democratic National Committee has told staffers to hold all fire, until he secures the party's nomination.
The directive has come down from the highest levels within the party, according to a top source.
Within the DNC, Huckabee is known as the "glass jaw -- and they're just waiting to break it."
In the last three weeks since Huckabee's surge kicked in, the DNC hasn't released a single press release criticizing his rising candidacy.
The last DNC press release critical of Huckabee appeared back on March 2nd.
[DNC Press Release Attack Summary:
Governor Mitt Romney (R-MA) 37% (99 press releases)
Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R-NY) 28% (74)
Senator John McCain (R-AZ) 24% (64)
Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN) 8% (20)
Governor Mike Huckabee 2% (4)]
In fact, as the story broke over the weekend that Huckabee said he wanted to isolate AIDS patients back in 1992, the DNC ignored the opportunity to slam the candidate from the left.
"He'll easily be their McGovern, an easy kill," mocked one senior Democrat operative Tuesday morning from Washington.
"His letting out murderers because they shout 'Jesus', his wanting to put 300,000 AIDS patients and Magic Johnson into isolation, ain't even scratching the surface of what we've got on him."
The discipline the Democrats have shown in not engaging Huckabee has earned the praise of one former Republican Party official:
"The Democrats are doing a much better job restraining themselves than the GOP did in 2003 when Howard Dean looked like he was on the brink of winning the nomination."
A close friend to Huckabee explains: "Look, Mike is Hillary Clinton's worst nightmare. They should be squirming."

which attacks Huckabee by nameStating a fact is an attack?
Yeah...because Mitt Romney has so much room to talk.
John Kerry RINO
Pot, meet Kettle.
And Mitt hires them, then fires them, then hires them, then fires them. Of course all through the legal contractor.
"I don't consider myself a "racist" or a "bigot." But Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee apparently does.
Because I happen to see the merit of a measure, proposed by two Arkansas state lawmakers, that would require anyone registering to vote in the Razorback State to prove citizenship and anyone applying for state services to prove legal residency.
To Huckabee's mind, anyone who supports such a law has succumbed to "race-baiting and demagoguery." That would include yours truly. It also would include a majority of my fellow California residents.
Indeed, it's bad enough that government officials, like Huckabee, knowingly and willingly countenance illegal immigration. It's worse that they also want to reward those who have stolen into the country." http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20050218/news_lz1e18perkins.html
Mitt Romney has had the right mind-set on this from Day One, Huckabee has not.
Only conservative, pro-life candidate NOT soft on border --- Duncan Hunter!
CNN: Romney claims bears crap in the woods.
Mitt Romney never attempted to create policies that aided and abetted illegal immigrants. Mike Huckabee did.
Can you name the first policy that Huckabee implemented that cut down on illegals?
Romney vetoed a bill Huckabee fought for. Romney created a program that coordinated state officials with ICE officials. I think it’s blatantly obvious who did more work in that department and who cared about it more.
Listen, we can pick apart people all day. Fred Thompson voted for amnesties. Fred Thompson voted against increasing fines on employers who hired illegals. Fred Thompson voted against creating programs to assist employers to determine the legality of their potential hires.
But Fred Thompson is far and away better on the boarder issue than Mike Huckabee. He’s far better than McCain, as well. The exact same thing is true with Romney.
Running around calling a man a RINO is counterproductive, especially when it’s at best questionable.
Yeah, I guess they’re all RINOs next to Tancredo and Hunter, if you want to play that infantile game. But I don’t think it’s in the best interest of our party or our nation.
In my eyes, we’ve got Hunter, Tancredo, Romney, and Thompson who are acceptable on the border. The rest simply aren’t.
And the big bust in New Bedford Massachusetts, at the defense contractor plant, did not happen until after Mitt left office (maybe Michael Bianco started hiring January 4 2007 when Romney left office, eh? Though they got their first govt contract in 2003)
Romney should stick to familiar territory and focus on his organizational skills, managerial abilities, risk management, and financial acumen. He already looks and sounds presidential, if a bit slick, but presidential nonetheless. http://www.boston.com/news/globe/city_region/breaking_news/2007/03/up_to_350_in_cu.html
“He has also stated in the past that he supported McCain-Kennedy.”
Romney never said that. In fact, in the interview you’re referencing, he said he didn’t endorse the bill.
Post your quote, or back off.
Anyone can have a path to citizenship if they go home and apply legally. That's the best plan.
In any event, Seems like Fred said something very similar - not in 2005, but in 2007. Nonetheless, both have better records and plans than Huckabee.
Thompson on a path to citizenship: [B]ecause we allowed ourselves to wait until we woke up one day and found 12 million illegals here, theres no easy solution. And I think that you have to realize that youre either going to drive 12 million people underground permanently, which is not a good solution. Youre going to get them all together and get them out of the country, which is not going to happen. Or youre going to have to, in some way, work out a deal where they can have some aspirations of citizenship, but not make it so easy that its unfair to the people waiting in line and abiding by the law. (Fox News Hannity & Colmes, 4/3/07)
Fred on the problems with cracking down on employers: We havent enforced the law, in terms of employers. For 20 years, weve not enforced the law, and thats a part of the problem. You cant enforce it all on the backs of the employers. People falsify information that they give employers and all that. Thats not a solution to the problem. (Fox News Hannity & Colmes, 4/3/07)
-----> Fred on his skepticism of a brick-and-mortar border fence: FOXs ALAN COLMES: You dont put up a fence, either, do you? Is that bad neighbor policy, put a fence up? THOMPSON: If it would work. I mean, I dont know thats a technical problem. In this day and age, I would not think you would have to use bricks and mortar to get that job done. But we ought to do everything that we can to get it done to the extent that we can and then, as I say, I think people would be willing to take a look at the rest of the problem, what we do with the problem that we created. (Fox News Hannity & Colmes, 4/3/07)
Fred on enforcement first: We woke up one day after years of neglect and apparently discovered that we have somewhere between 12 million and 20 million illegal aliens in this country. So it became an impossible situation to deal with. I mean, theres really no good solution. So what do you do? You have to start over. Well, Im concerned about the next 12 million or 20 million. So thats why enforcement, and enforcement at the border, has to be primary. (Foxs Fox News Sunday, 3/11/07)
Fred on not rounding up illegal immigrants: You know, if you have the right kind of policies, and youre not encouraging people to come here and encouraging them to stay once theyre here, theyll go back, many of them, of their own volition, instead of having to, you know, load up moving vans and rounding people up. Thats not going to happen. (Foxs Fox News Sunday, 3/11/07)
This is what the Committee to Reelect the President allegedly did in 1972 to the Democrats. I think, through the news media, the DNC is trying to steer the Republican nomination to their advantage. I think a lot of the dirt and negative coverage in the Republican primary begins with DNC and Clinton operatives.
CNN: Romney paints Huckabee as soft on illegal immigration, pot meet kettle
That’s the Clinton machine at work as I see it!
” Within the DNC, Huckabee is known as the “glass jaw — and they’re just waiting to break it.” “
Huckabee’s got all the warning signs of an electoral disaster waiting to happen.
Here’s more stuff the liberals have on him and will use at their convenience (and our inconvenience) - the pleas from the Dumond victims to please not release Dumond the rapist:
