The Walker County Commissioners Court will hear a presentation on the I-69 Corridor project during a regular session today.

Michael Parks will give the presentation to the five-member court at 9 a.m. at the courthouse.

Sherri Pegoda, administrative assistant to the County Judge Danny Pierce, said the presentation will educate the court on how the project will affect Walker County.

According to Keep Texas Moving Web site, “On November 13, the Texas Department of Transportation, in coordination with the Federal Highway Administration, released the Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the proposal for the I-69/Trans-Texas Corridor Project.”

The project, expected to span from far South Texas to Northeast Texas, is a “plan to solve the transportation problems Texans are facing, such as increased congestion, reduced maintenance and the lack of new capacity.”

The project report recommends state transportation officials to examine the use of “existing highways first with new corridors as a secondary option,” continue environmental studies and hear public comments.

“We are doing what the public asked us to do and that is look at existing highways first,” said Amadeo Saenz, TxDOT executive director. “If improvements to existing highways and infrastructure cannot be made to handle long range transportation needs — or if citizens and local officials tell us they prefer a new corridor — other options will be considered. Decisions will be made based on public input and detailed studies of environmental and social impacts.”

TxDOT is set to hold Town Hall meetings along the corridor and formal public hearings on the environmental study at the beginning of the new year.

I can’t wait to hear the proposal for getting around Lumberton! It’s a bottleneck for Hwy 69!
