Huckabee: U.S. gave up on religion
ArkansasDemocratGazette ^ | June 8, 1998 | Linda Caillouet

Government may have dropped the ball in modern American society, but religion dropped it first, Gov. Mike Huckabee told Southern Baptist pastors Sunday night. "The reason we have so much government is because we have so much broken humanity," he said. "And the reason we have so much broken humanity is because sin reigns in the hearts and lives of human beings instead of the Savior." Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, addressed his contemporaries at the two-day Pastors' Conference, which continues today. The three-day Southern Baptist Convention begins Tuesday here in the heartland of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the city in which the Mormons have their world headquarters. Huckabee told the pastors gathered in the Salt Palace Convention Center that while the March 1, 1997, tornadoes which struck Arkansas were tragic, at least the devastation could be clearly seen from a helicopter. In contrast, he said, the catalysts for the nation's recent school shootings -- including the one March 24 near Jonesboro that left four students and a teacher dead and 10 others wounded -- were harder to see but were driven by "the winds of spiritual change in a nation that has forgotten its God."

The God-less and purposeless secular society we have created directly contributed to the deaths of those children. Don’t you find it odd that things like this didn’t occur in US schools before God was forcibly expelled?

"Things like this" are BARELY happening now. As a percentage of the school-age population, the number of people being killed is so far down in the noise that you can't really do a statistical analysis of "occurances".

There were massacres in the past, way before this supposed current malaise. Of course, what's changed is now we immediately hear of everything, and people might be encouraged to act out because they hear about others doing so -- except there's no real indication that occurances are "going up".

Children by and large are statistically completely safe at schools, even with things like the Tech massacre last year.

If anything, the decline in christian charity and practice is a RESULT of a concerted effort by secularists to use government to overtake religion, not the other way around.

Huckabee blamed religion for abandoning people, who then had no choice but to seek government help. But in fact, it was secularists who put government in the anti-poverty business, driving out religious organizations with all their "moral codes and feelings of guilt". The secularists made Government into Santa Clause, giving people "entitlements" to government help (my tax dollars), and thus eliminating the "need for religion".

One goal of socialist/communist philosophy is to free people from their dependence on religion.

Huckabee supports using government as a replacement for religious charity, and really for government as a replacement for God's hand of providence in our lives. Who needs God when Government will protect you and provide for you and care for you?

Huckabee is of the social conservative big-government group who thinks you can USE government as the instrument of God. He is dead wrong.

I didn’t care for the Huckster before he ran for POTUS and wearing his religion on his sleeve like this isn’t convincing me he’s a conservative. No thanks.

Nothing happens in this world that God doesn’t allow!

I see nothing wrong with Huckabee’s speech to the SBC Pastor’s. They understood exactly what he was saying.

So, you had rather that Satan take it over. Well, he is well on his way.

“Huckabee is spewing BS like Falwell and Robertson did right after 9/11.”

You are too kind. Claiming God endorses you for POTUS heads off into Benny Hinn terretory. Did the media ask him which church that will fix all this?

I agree. I am not sure why people are castigating him, other than the fact that they may have blinders on for Fred.

“After reading this, I cannot think of a single reason I could ever vote for this nut.
I say this as a conservative, God-fearing, Christian.

Huckabee is spewing BS like Falwell and Robertson did right after 9/11.”

Huckabee is frightening. It’s like seeing Jim Bakker or Ted Haggart running for president. God help us all.

As I stated before, as a Catholic I am not looking to elect a Preacher-in-Chief.

I believe you are mis-interpreting his point. I think his point is that a gradual abandonment of Christian-ish principles and a belief in God led to the circumstances that fell into place that allowed this tradgedy to occur. Kind of like the description of the coal-fired train accident in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged.

This is substantially different from the Falwell accusation that God allowed 9/11 to happen.

I find the comparison between the visual storm damage and the invisible but just as destructive spiritual/ideological damage to be a pretty nice turn of phrase. Look at the home life of one of boys who committed the crime, the establishment that gave them pills to treat them rather than character instruction (one was treated for violent behavior), and a school system and culture that devalues life, what do you expect? Sure, the boys were evil (and now they are free with a clean record).

Clear thinking is clearly not your strong suit.

Huckabee has no sexual scandals like Baker and Haggart.

I wasn’t referring to sexual scandals. They were excellent at pulling the wool over their ‘flock’.
