Hazleton man charged in beating death of 2-year-old

A Hazleton man was arraigned Sunday night on charges related to the apparent beating death of a 2-year-old boy.

Hazleton police arrested 20-year-old Alexander Garcia, charging him with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of children.

He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Joseph Zola and committed to Luzerne County Correctional Facility on $2 million cash bail.

According to an affidavit of probable cause, Hazleton Cpl. Gerald Tray and Patrolman Shawn Conti were dispatched to Hazleton General Hospital on Sunday at 12:29 a.m. for a death investigation.

Hospital staff took them to the emergency room, where 2-year-old Emanuel Gonzalez was lying motionless on a hospital bed. The boy was bruised on all over his body, the affidavit states.

Gonzalez was pronounced dead on arrival.

Ambulance personnel told police they were dispatched to the 800 block of Diamond Avenue for a report of a fall victim and found Gonzalez covered in vomit and unresponsive.

Lillian Torres, the boy’s mother, told police she, Gonzalez and Garcia moved to Hazleton two months ago. Since moving to town, Torres said Garcia, her boyfriend, became angry and started spanking her son, the affidavit says.

Garcia, Torres said, had been hitting the child for days, according to police.

Garcia allegedly admitted to hitting Gonzalez on the face Wednesday, dropping the boy in the bathtub Thursday, and spanking the child Friday. Garcia told police he noticed the boy appeared sick earlier on Saturday but was afraid to take him to the hospital, they said.

Garcia’s preliminary hearing was scheduled for Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. in Luzerne County Central Court.

Disgusting - beat them both black and blue then give them to the prison system - small in stature and doesn’t speak English so he’ll make the perfect bitch for some big ole boy in prison.

I wouldn't want to live in a big city like Hazelton these days.

The "official" population of Hazelton is about 22K. God knows what the real population is. In any event, it is not a "big city" by any stretch.

Re: “And may the abuser get his just rewards at the hands of his maker. I hope he enjoys eternal damnation.”

If Garcia gets jail tme - this jerk WILL get his just rewards! Prisoners don’t like child molesters and/or child killers. No wonder this jerk was trying to kill himself - he knows what is going to happen to him in jail!

He’ll get his reward on this earth and in the next life!

We have a sickening case now being prosecuted in Pittsburgh PA of a man raping his live-in girlfriend's two-year-old little girl. The child had been battered and died of internal injuries. The child's mother was working when the assault occurred, supporting her boyfriend's useless a$$.

LOL
Hazleton is a small town crap hole. Always has been. The difference is when my husband and I arrived 15 years ago to work in the area they hated us (white) NYers. Now they have a whole different invasion. They are not accustomed to culture and that is most of the problem with the hillbilies.

Torres is not a she-dog. She comes from a good family that cares about her and her mother did EVERYTHING in her power to keep her daughter on the right track. Today’s youth is out of control and no matter how good of an upbringing you give them they still rebel and think they know it all. This in know way reflects Torres’s upbringing. She had many traumatic experiences as a child that caused her to be some what mentally challenged and unfortuantely she does not have the capacity to understand that she did not know it all. She was also being abused by this monster. She has a great loving family and we resent what has been posted about her! THINK ABOUT HER EXTENDED FAMILY and the pain we are ALL suffering and maybe you will be a little more compassionate!

Ok I understand that her upbringing was good. But that doesn't explain why she couldn't get up and leave. I mean what was the worse that could happen has already happen. That poor little boy had no idea right from wrong and couldn't control his actions. I mean maybe the baby would have been in better hands with the grandmother or the father of the child ( he is a good man and would never hurt that child).
