There's some truth to it. Northern Republicans are liberals who care mainly about controlling federal spending. Southern Republicans are conservatives who are passionate about a raft of cultural issues: faith, guns, and immigration. They are as different as day and night. The only thing has united them in the past is an aversion to the Democrats.

Nowadays, most of the Republicans in New England are really people who inherited “old money”. They did not like Democrats’ attempts to redistribute their wealth. Other than that, they are liberals.
