I know of several past incidents in the media where police reported that a firearm 'jammed' and it turned out that the person trying to clear the gun and make it safe after the fact wasn't familiar with how the gun operated.
Thus, "This gun is jammed" becomes reported 'fact'.
He killed himself saving everyone a crime investigation.
That's my take on it, at least.
