It doesn’t come across to me as being extremely leftist. Much of the sentiment is that of a soldier saying don’t forget us over here going through hell and don’t stop supporting us in the fight for freedom, otherwise we will become as irrelevant as the armies and empires of history.
I agree. The imagery of being crusaders or armies of the empire is a little off base, but the sentiment of fearing you’ll be forgotten is not unfounded.
I just wasn’t fond of the singer... Not a fan of the strained Bruce Springsteen “It hurts to sing this” style.
I’m a big fan of the old Billy Joel. Some of his old songs capture terrific American imagery. “Downeaster Alexa”, “Allentown”... good stuff.
I hate that singers and entertainers don’t always agree with me, but given that he’s giving to a good cause with this, and has given of himself to the troops before... I think he’s earned some artistic license before I’ll burn all his albums.
