MUST READ . . .

THE RESOLUTE PRESIDENT
By R. Emmett Tyrrell, Jr.

WASHINGTON — As with the late A. Lincoln, so with the present G.W. Bush — once the right general was found and the right strategy adopted, victory was in hand and a beleaguered president’s fortunes were restored. Doubtless President Bush is aware of the parallel, and, perchance, he will avoid Ford’s Theatre.

A curious inhibition shared by both Bush ‘41 and Bush ‘43 is to downplay their interest in reading. Actually both are hearty readers, certainly as compared with the general public. Earlier this year I attended a luncheon that the President hosted at the White House for the distinguished British historian Andrew Roberts, whose 736-page volume, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, the President had polished off months before, even before the book was released in America. He had been talking the book up with his staff, and when I heard that my friend, Roberts, was going to be in town, I passed that intelligence on. Bush invited Roberts in, not only for luncheon but also to lecture the White House staff. This president knows his history and its significance.

Through the last three years of gloomy news he has been called “bull-headed,” but the evidence from Iraq, the economy, and various other precincts, for instance, advances in stem-cell research, suggests a different adjective, to wit, “resolute.” Moreover, in Iraq we see not only a resolute president but also a flexible president. Last spring, he changed his tactics in Iraq and the change has been successful.

CREATION, CHILDREN AND GW BUSH
Mr Bush is absolutely right when he says that all people deserve to live in freedom. His political adversaries gain nothing when they avoid that truth and attempt to undermine it. Mr Bush is also right when he labels those who stand against those for whom freedom and self determination would be undermined, as evil men. It is clear that those willing to slaughter others to preserve their own positions of power are evil. There is no middle ground, there is no ‘other opinion,’ despite the attempts of many, using more millions of words, to create just such ‘truths.’ Those who refer to such evil men as the ‘opposition’ that offer up an ‘alternative’ political agenda or as ‘freedom fighters,’ only serves to highlight the depravity of those willing to usurp the truth.

The administration’s adversaries are now picking up on the words of anyone that challenge their credibility, even if that challenge has no real merit. The NIE, reviled because of prewar estimates are now embraced with religious fervor because they reversed themselves again when it comes to Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Joe Biden, the Democrat Senator from Delaware with a long and well documented history of plagiarism and similar offenses, is afforded media prime time because he referred to the president as a serial liar.

Mr Bush made minority education a priority as Governor of Texas, and he succeeded in raising the level of Texas schools. That truth was acknowledged as minority voters supported Mr Bush in his reelection bid for the Austin Governor’s Mansion. No one is saying he has all the right answers, but the proof is in the pudding. More minorities got into and graduated from colleges as a result of better education policies.

In his political campaigns, he addressed the ‘velvet discrimination of lowered expectations,’ and he struck a chord among minority voters, who voted for him in unprecedented numbers.

MR BUSH IS HATED BECAUSE WITH FEW WORDS, HE CONVEYS THE TRUTH.

I did watch the Christmas tree lighting, but I wanted mainly to watch the national prayer. The Pastor is from my town. I couldn’t get the video to work in Firefox and when I used IE the prayer was already over
