Romney takes leap of faith with religion speech

(CNN) -- White House hopeful Mitt Romney said religious liberty "is fundamental to America's greatness," in his Thursday address on faith in America.

..."There are some who may feel that religion is not a matter to be seriously considered in the context of the weighty threats that face us. If so, they are at odds with the nation's founders," Romney said.

"Freedom requires religion just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone," he said.

..."If I am fortunate to become your president, I will serve no one religion, no one group, no one cause, and no one interest. A president must serve only the common cause of the people of the United States," he said.

>>His speech did show that he does have a good understanding of the 1st Amendment that says “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof:”<<

I agree with that, and it is very important.

>>I wish he had a good understanding of the 2nd Amendment like he does the 1st.<<

Amen to that! I suppose that’ll be another thread!

Did you listen to the speech? If not, I’d highly recommend it. If you did, listen to it again.

I had a roommate in college who was Mormon. Without a doubt he was the most impressive man I’ve ever known. Never talked about his religion unless I asked him a specific question. I had occasion to meet a lot of his fellow Mormons and I got the distinct feeling that I would have been just as impressed with them as I was with him. I knew nothing about Mormons before meeting him except what I had learned from my upbringing as a Southern Baptist, most of it negative.

I hope and pray that Mitt’s soul is safe for eternity, but I wouldn’t let that concern keep me from voting for him for President.

I can honestly say that I was not a Romney supporter prior to this, but after his speech he is very high on my list!

“I also think it makes Huckabee’s dancing around religion and Romney look very very small.”

Yes, as it should. Huckabee also looks very crass the way he is trying to quietly tap into religious conflicts for his own benefit.

I could not watch the speech because a wind storm has our satellite service on the blink. It won’t be working again until this Friday. I hope I get a chance to see the speech.

However, from what I have read of the excerpts, the message was refreshing, strong, inspiring and in keeping with our country’s foundational beliefs.

I am NOT a Mormon and I am not even a very good Catholic. I simply believe in God and I believe our Founders were right.

Will I vote for Romney? I don’t know yet, but his choice of religion will NOT impact my decision.

“This speech does nothing to change the fact that he is pro-abortion,pro-homosexual marriage, and a socialist when it comes to health care.”

It’s apparent you don’t know Mitt Romney.

I’m not voting for Mormonism. I’m voting for Mitt Romney, the man.

I don’t have my scriptures with me, but there are several on not judging others, which, when translated from Greek, means not to condemn others. You seem to have missed that. And I will be eternally grateful that people like you, who think they know the scriptures in their literal translation (but also pick and choose) won’t be the judge of me.

You’re not up to date on that situation, I see..;^)

Who is the candidate you support, by the way, assuming it is a Republican?

>>Precisely why Huckabee and his bible thumping are so dangerous.<<

I’m not on the Huck Wagon, but I’d prefer a man who is guided by his beliefs and sticks by them no matter what the situation; than a man who puts them on a shelf and remains quiet just because it wouldn’t be politically correct to speak out. You get no waffling with the former, and you know exactly where they stand regardless of whether or not you agree with it.

The Clinton’s are examples of those who profess a weak belief, but don’t admit that it’s the guiding force in their life. What’s the result? Decisions made by which ever way the wind is blowing. Rudderless boats.

To the believer, the Word of God is authoritative for all aspects of life, no matter who their employer is.

“The Man that continues to hire illegals to mow his yard? ;)”

No, the man that fired the COMPANY that hired the illegals.

One of my favorite scriptures:

8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the LORD.

9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah 55: 8-9
