No faith in Mitt’s candor
The Boston Herald ^ | 12/06/2007 | Micheal Graham

Suddenly “The Speech” is starting to look like a brilliant idea.

Snip>

As a former GOP consultant who believes Mitt Romney talking about Mormonism is about as politically productive as John Edwards talking about hair-care products, it turns out there’s something even worse he could be talking about: illegal immigration.

When news broke that Romney’s “sanctuary mansion” was still open for business this week, it was a double-whammy for the former gov who would be president. It confirmed Rudy Giuliani’s criticism from last week’s debate in Florida, but it also highlights Romney’s fundamental weakness - does the guy really mean anything he says?

I’m not suggesting Romney is a liar. I just wonder if there’s anything he’s campaigning for that he truly believes in? Or is he a CEO with a 10-point plan to win the GOP nomination, simply checking off all the boxes?

“Abortion. Pro-life, check.”

“Marriage? Traditional family, check.”

“Immigration?Tough enforcement, ooops!”

When the press played “gotcha!” with Romney last year over the immigration status of the employees at Community Lawn Service With A Heart, I defended him against this blatantly cheap shot. The owner was a legal immigrant Romney knew through his church. Romney should have been able to trust him.

Was Romney supposed to do what reporters at the Boston Globe-Democrat did - stop every swarthy-looking person with an accent at the Romney house and demand to see their papers?

But how did this happen twice? How did the same firm get away with sending illegals to Romney’s Belmont mansion for another year?

If I were a presidential candidate who’d just been humiliated in the national media for inadvertently hiring illegal immigrants, I’d be checking green cards every time I saw a worker with so much as a Taco Bell [YUM] bag or Brazilian bikini wax.

Best line in the piece,

Or as the old saying goes, “Fool me once, shame on you; Fool me twice and I’m too dumb to be president of the United States.”

I’ve already become amazingly tired of a speech I haven’t yet heard.

It is said he will not address any of the specifics of his faith. He will lecture Americans about religious tolerance. That has little to do with evangelicals and fundamentalists concerns regarding “WHAT HE BELIEVES”. This is what concerns evagelical Christians. To not address this issue is to not understands what concerns this demographic he wishes to bring to his side. Evangelicals believe in religious tolerence. Anyone can believe anything they want in America. That does not translate to votes, and if he is to do himself any good he must address these concerns.

Mitt’s candor?

Kinda like “Kennedy’s sobriety” or “Hillary’s delicate nature.”

“does the guy really mean anything he says?”

“Say Anything Mitt” the shoe fits.

The excepts being posted look very defensive to me. Huckabee must be scaring the daylights out of Romney in Iowa.

I hope Mitt kept the receipts.

I don't get it. He should have had someone on his staff handle this issue. How is he going to manage the presidency, if he can't delegate something like this?

David Horsey has a brutal take on Romney in his most recent cartoon. It's entitled, "The Speech Mitt Romney Should Give" and goes:

"I know some of you are concerned because I am a Mormon..."

"Well, I assure you, I've never let my private beliefs intrude on my public duties..."

"When it was expedient, I was pro-choice, pro-gay and pro state-mandated health care..."

"Now that I'm seeking votes from conservatives, I've switched positions on all three..."

"And on torture, immigration and taxes, I'll adopt any viewpoint that'll get me elected..."

"So, you don't need to worry about my beliefs..."

"...I don't have any!"

Exactly right.

Jay Severin was defending Romney last night, but he’s overlooking the fact that this is the second time this has happened. That Romney trusted the owner of the company to ensure that his workers were legal is a concern to me. It indicates a level of naivety that is incompatible with being president and Commander in Chief.

What is worse, and something I’ve been accused of bigotry about, is the lawncare company owner is Mormon. So Mitt acted to protected the interests of someone in the church rather than the interest of a prospective president. If the lawncare owner had been Gentile, Mitt would likely have canned him way back when.

It does appear from what I've read, that their shared Mormon faith did influence Romney's decision.

Here is my problem with all of this. If the press is asking and finding out these people are illegal and holding his feet to the fire, shouldn’t we demand they do it for all candidates? Seems a piling on here is expedient for the anti Romney crowd. I am Hunter supporter first and foremost, but lets show some consistency of values here. I am sure he is not the only candidate that has this issue, its just that we don’t demand the press scrutinize all for the same issue. That would be fair and balanced reporting.

I understand. You’re probably not used to seeing someone who’s educated, clean and good looking.
