Immigration is a tricky issue. The influx of immigrants into the United States, legal and otherwise, excites many people, but politicians who try to exploit the issue often find their efforts unrewarded. The Republican candidate most closely identified with the restrictionist position on immigration, Tom Tancredo, is going nowhere. So is Duncan "I Built the Border Fence" Hunter. And the two candidates who have been liberal advocates of immigration in the past only to tack right during the primary find that the issue has tripped them up. Mitt Romney's "sanctuary mansion" will continue to generate headlines during a week when the Romney campaign was hoping for a lot of free media covering its candidate's "religion speech". Giuliani's tough talk on immigration now only reminds voters of his advocacy for immigrants back when he was mayor of New York City.
Meanwhile, the candidate who hasn't shied away from his liberal immigration record leads in the latest Rasmussen national tracking robopoll and most recent Iowa polling. The possible Senate "comprehensive" immigration bill may have seriously damaged John McCain earlier this year, but now he is more or less tied for second place in New Hampshire.
Clearly Republican voters are concerned about immigration - as are Democratic and independent voters. But rushing toward restrictionism may not turn out to be the best campaign strategy. Romney and Giuliani could have fallen into the immigration trap.
Matthew, you idiot, there is no way on God's green earth Amnesty McCain or Amnesty Huckabee is going to win the nomination.
The way they poll and their views have nothing to do with each other. My new phrase, “its the media stupid.” Not you of course but its the reason why Hunter and Tancredo don’t poll well. They are not propped up by the media.
“Where does the Weekly Standard get their staff? From the open borders shills at the WSJ.
“Matthew, you idiot, there is no way on God’s green earth Amnesty McCain or Amnesty Huckabee is going to win the nomination.”
Strange days indeed!
I hope the other folks at the Weekly Standard are not going to be pushing amnesty. I can’t recall from last spring where they stood.
The RINOS are running the party. We must rip it from them.
“Restricitonism” sniff, sniff,
“Populism” sniff, sniff
stodgy, unemployable, poly-sci grads.
It’s not at all complicated. Yes, this country has benefited from immigrants, and always will—but LEGAL immigrants, not invaders with no respect for this country or its laws. I dropped WS some years back because some of the policies they supported were almost indistinguishable from those of the ‘Rats. A much better (but of course not perfect) weekly is Human Events.
LOL!
Yes, Human Events is one of the better rags out there.
“The RINOS are running the party. We must rip it from them.”
BUMP!
I am chomping at the bit to vote in the primary. I hava problem though, can't decide between Hunter or Tancredo.
Weekly Standard, home of Fred Barnes and Bill Kristol. Enough said.
