LABOUR GOVERNMENT 'FALLING APART' SAYS CAMERON

DAVID Cameron mounted a scathing attack on the Labour administration today as he warned that the Government is "falling apart".

Mr Cameron’s assault on the Prime Minister during today's lively Question Time covered party donations, defence spending and prison places.

Taking a swipe at Gordon Brown the Tory leader said: "It took Tony Blair 10 years before confidence in his administration collapsed. You’ve managed it in six months.”

To the delight of lively Tory backbenchers Mr Cameron even drew comparisons between the Prime Minister and missing canoeist John Darwin.

"I know he wants us to think, like the man in the canoe, that he hasn't been around for the past five years.

“But you were the Chancellor who failed to build the prisons,” he added, condemning the failure to build more prison places.

"Sentences should fit the crime - not the number of prison places."

Mr Brown reminded the opposition that early release of prisoners was decided by the last Tory Government.

Turning to Britain's defence, Mr Cameron called for a "full-time Defence Secretary" criticising the sharing of the job with Scotland's Secretary.

“You said you would always do the right thing by the armed forces.

"So can you tell us, with our troops fighting on two fronts, why you’ve still got a part time Secretary of State for Defence?”

The Prime Minister was swift to defend the work of Defence Secretary Des Browne and said: “There have been many hard working defence secretaries on all sides of this House.

“The Defence Secretary who is in post is a hard working, conscientious, and dedicated servant of the people and I defy the Opposition to suggest that there is any occasion on which he has failed to do his duty by the armed forces of this country.

“The Defence Secretary continues to do all the work of the Defence Secretary. The proposal that the job be shared with another member of the Cabinet, the Scottish Secretary of State, was a proposal made in the 2001 manifesto of the Conservative Party.”

Mr Brown repeatedly challenged the Conservatives to return to cross-party talks to discuss Labour proposals for reform of political party funding.

He defended the Government’s record, insisting crime was down by 30% under Labour, there were more police and 20,000 new prison places had been built with more on the way.

“We can do it because we have run a successful economy - not the failed economy we inherited from the Conservatives," added the Prime Minister.

Gordon Brown needs to get a portfolio for all of his papers. Tony Blair always had his neatly in a nice leather binder.

Apparently it is no good for Brown because he is pretty much blind in one of his eyes (due to a Rudgy accident when he was younger).
