When Honda and Toyota can get better fuel mileage out of a safer and more stylish car at a cheaper price, why would anyone want to buy something like this.

Funny you should mention that because there are persistent rumors that Toyota is working on a small “city car” (based on the Toyota Aygo sold in Europe) that will be sold in the USA. We could see a concept of this new model probably some time in the first half of 2008.

A rear engine car offers designers a chance to develop a different and more sportier kind of car. Getting away from the New Beetle's "chick car" image is the first step. Making it into a car that's both affordable and fun to drive is a big challenge. I like what I see, but it needs more work before the UP! car is ready to go into production in the next decade.

You have no idea what the mileage of this is and no idea how safe it is -- so it's impossible to compare to Honda or Toyota. Yet you make a blanket statement like that.

Because what Honda and Toyota produce will handle like crap, and a VW won’t?
