Huckabee Chafes at 'Front-Runner' Label Come-From-Behind Candidate Seeks to Temper Expectations

Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, for months cast as a "second-tier" candidate, now finds himself with another label he is not eager to have: "front-runner."

Without the money to hire field organizers around the state to ensure that voters will turn out, the campaign is instead relying on a network of pastors, parents who home-school their children, and other Christian conservatives. Monday night, he appeared at a closed-door meeting with Iowa pastors that was organized in part by some of his conservative religious backers.

How do you think that we got Reagan? If it hadn’t been for the slew of pastor’s, grass root Christians, etc. working all most non stop, registering their members there never would have been a President Reagan.

Pat Robertson finished a strong second in the Iowa caucuses of 1988. He was barely beat by Bob Dole who then went on to win the nomination.

I am skeptical that Huckabee has much appeal beyond caucus states where the determinants are political and religious fervor.

>> Remember, you are voting for Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces, not the person who gives you warm fuzzies.

Actually, the idea of having a POTUS that is a strong and competent CinC gives me warm fuzzies...

‘course, that rules out Huckabee.

There is a BIG difference in working with pastors and agreeing with them and electing one Commander in Chief of the US Armed Forces.

>> The real problem is that he’s too moralistic (which is not the same thing as moral).

This is a great point.

Reagan was out in the open.

This is the Huckster:

Monday night, he appeared at a closed-door meeting with Iowa pastors that was organized in part by some of his conservative religious backers.

Can you link where Reagan met with pastors behind closed doors????????

"While Congress debates guest-worker programs, Huckabee tells me, the most important problem is being ignored. “Seal the border,” he says. “Until you do that, you don’t have any control over how many people are coming in, who they are, and where they’re going.”

Well, sealing the border may have been ignored by Huckabee as well as the others seeking the GOP nomination, but the problem is not being ignored. If you know Gov. Huckabee you might relay to him that Duncan Hunter wrote a bill for such a fence that is now law. He has worked tirelessly to get such a bill passed as well as working to get more Border Patrol Agents on our southern borders. You might also intimate to Gov. Huckabee that he is not the pinnacle of social conservatism in this race. Duncan Hunter has introduced "Life at Conception" legislation and has not only been a useful ally but a tireless advocate for life. I understand, none of the above matters, nor is it of any apparent importance to the GOP electorate as I can discern. The GOP is now the party of money, polls and pandering, just like the Democrats. One parties ignorance and PC proclivities originate from a different overall ideology and is better disguised for the masses; But of late, there are more comparisons to be drawn than contrasts. Mike Huckabee is a leader for change, the very change described in the preceding sentences.

Me also thinks that attributing all anti-Huckster comments merely to Fred-partisanship is a losing position.

There are very real reasons to oppose Huckabee.

Do I REALLY need to mention them again? Oh, okay.

He’s a tax-and-spend nanny-state busybody big-government amnesty-loving liberal who happens to be pro-life.

THAT’S why I don’t like him.
