I thought the New Testament Church met house to house and in public places...don’t recall reading about any church buildings.

You are right. The early Christians were persecuted for three centuries and met "underground" where ever they could. However, a "church" is not the building itself, but the group of Christians themselves that meet somewhere on the first day of the week to worship.
