Pretty much. Heres what he said:
MIKE HUCKABEE: Ive been to Guantanamo, I was there, I guess its been about a year and a half ago. I think the problem with Guantanamo is not in that its facilities are inadequate. Its the symbol that it represents. Its clearly become a symbol to the rest of the world as a place that has become problematic for us as a nation. I was quite frankly impressed with the quality of the facilities and even the attention to care that was given to the detainees, but that aside, it doesnt alter that Guantanamo to the rest of the world is a symbol that is not in our best interests to continue pursuing.
Never mind the fact its been a valuable source of information. No, he thinks its a bad symbol, so it should now be closed.
After the Iowa poll showed that Republican voters like him but found him much less presidential and electable than Romney, Huckabee sought to build his foreign policy credentials, meeting with a group of retired generals who are in Des Moines to urge the 2008 candidates to commit to opposing torture. After the meeting, Huckabee joined Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in declaring his opposition to the interrogation procedure known as waterboarding, and said he would support closing the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a contrast with the other leading Republicans.
Bryan:
That paragraph suggests that youre easily swayed by a single meeting on important issues that have been before the American people for years
My take: Hes putting symbolism over substance and putting worldwide condemnation ahead of the security realities. Those are not good qualities in a commander in chief wholl lead a country that was globally envied and reviled long before the war even started.
Paul Mirengoff:
I suspect that Huckabee required little lobbying. Waterboarding and long-term detention arent very Christian; they merely keep terrorists out of action and, in special circumstances enable us to find out where were going to be attacked next and/or where we can find those who are planning the next attacks. But if Huckabee actually did reach his position based on the views of a handful of generals, and without consulting the people actually charged with protecting this country from terrorists, then hes even less qualified to be president than I suspect.
With any luck, this will be the end of Hucks presidential chances.
The first word in your list bespeaks a ton - MONEY. Aren't preachers pretty much always begging for it from the pulpit? I'm sorry, but I'm going to have a really hard time voting for a preacher to run this country.
Yes, I'm Christian, and I believe in charitable giving, but the US Government isn't a CHARITY OPERATION, as many people would like for us taxpayers to willingly believe.
Bible Thumping Surrender Monkey
My understanding is that people walk away from waterboarding physically unharmed. That makes waterboarding torture the same way fingernails on a blackboard is torture.
No, torture is having your fingers lopped off one at a time with a pair of wire cutters. Torture is having bleach poured into your open eyeballs. Torture is having your kneecaps shot. Torture is having pieces of your body blow-torched to black cinder three square inches at a time. Torture is having a pair of tree-branch loppers taken to your genitals....
Waterboarding may be a gruelling interrogation technique, but it is not torture. It amazes me that the scumbag liberals and their allies in the dying, socialist mainstream newsrooms have been able to redefine torture in Americas daily lexicon, but it amazes me more that the cowardly conservatives have let the scumbags get away with it.
Obviously, Huckabee is just another pandering, whichever-way-the-wind-blows coward of a politician who equates a relative handful of noisy, anti-capitalist Euro-socialists with “the rest of the world”. The guy is a loser.
....nah, ya think? If the MSM and all the pundits think he's grand. He's a lib.
I'm waiting for the stories about airport bathrooms to start up. I'll vote for Thompson, Hunter, or Tacredo... that's about the only ones that I thing I could trust.
I'd prefer the Mormon over the Baptist preacher-and I'm Baptist.
George W Bush will go down in history as the American President who changed the Middle East for the better. He will be the President who brought that region into the 21st century. Those are the type of things history remembers. Truman, Reagan, Teddy and FD Roosevelt are all considered great for different reasons.
It doesn't really matter that you do not like Bush or can't see how he will be considered great because you are a faceless person acting like a know it all punching on a keyboard. Bush is a two term American President who against all opposition and pressure changed the world and avoided certain defeat from traitors in his Congress actively trying to thwart our soldiers in battle by sticking to his convictions. Bush's steadfastness has helped to save this nation, and that is a fact.
The new 'conservative' wing of the party that led the party down this ridiculous path of police actions are going to end up tanking every 'frontrunner' out there. I think I should send them a thank you note.
He’s a pro-life, pro-gun liberal. And he could very well be the Republican nominee.
Got it.
He is to the left of Rudy.
not after this episode.
Ditto.
We have three Rs running who are worthy of occupying the office of the president. They are Fred Thompson, Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo.
And if this pro-illegals, nanny-stater, tax-hiker is our nominee, we’re f**ked. He can kiss my ass before I vote for him.
