ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A car chase through downtown Anchorage ended in the arrest of a man who killed two people and seriously injured three others in a series of machete and gun attacks, police said.

According to an affidavit by police Detective Steve Hill, Rogers used a machete to kill his 51-year-old father, Christopher E. Rogers Sr., and seriously injure his father's 55-year-old girlfriend, Elann Moren, early Sunday in Palmer, about 40 miles north of Anchorage.

He shot Jason Wenger, 27, a graduate student at the University of Alaska Anchorage, while Wenger was sitting in his idling Ford Bronco in his driveway, according to the affidavit. Rogers opted not to take Wenger's vehicle because the shots made a lot of noise and he "did not want to take on the whole neighborhood," it said.

Rogers spent the rest of Sunday sleeping in the woods near downtown Anchorage, the affidavit said. He told officers at that point he was no longer worried about being caught and "just wanted to kill a few more people along the way," it said.

Rogers shot Liz Rumsey, 33, who was walking along the icy Chester Creek Trail near a quiet upper-middle-class neighborhood north of Westchester Lagoon. Rumsey underwent surgery and is expected to recover, police said.

On Monday morning, Rogers repeatedly shot 43-year-old Tamas Deak after Deak turned on his car and left it to idle, police said.

Deak was hospitalized in critical condition but was expected to survive, police said.

Deak's wife called 911 and police sent at least 50 detectives and patrol officers to the area, said Honeman. Police arrested Rogers after a short car chase through Anchorage during the morning rush. One officer was injured during the chase.

And it’s not even February yet? You should see how goofey they get out in rural areas. About half the people who live in the bush do so because they can’t fit in normal social settings.

The kind of people who if they lived in the suburbs, would be getting arrested for this or that every week. No law enforcement out here, so they seem to exist without as many problems.

Actually, the sun was up this morning at 11 a.m. and will set around 3:30 p.m. The sky right now at 11:13 a.m. is a brilliant Arctic blue with the sun gleaming on the snow. What most folks don’t realize is that up here near the Arctic Circle the sun rises and sets at a very shallow angle, which means that the sky starts to get light about two hours before sunrise and stays light about two hours after sunset. That’s why we get the “midnight sun” in the summer - the sun actually sets around here for an hour or so on the shortest day of the year, but the sky remains blue (and the sun never gets more than two or three degrees below the horizon). You should see it in the mountainous regions - the valley is in twilight while the mountaintops glow with orange-yellow sunshine. Very cool.

About this crime, though: I almost cried at dinner watching it on the news. The story was so sad. I had to explain to my 9-year-old son about mental illness. The deaths were tragic and awful. I think that this guy was long time crazy before the winter came on this year. Please pray for the families of those who have been hurt by this guy.
