If the people are so stupid, they’d buy the “it was a joke” excuse, then they are also too stupid to get the joke in the first place.
There are ways to make it clear you are joking. You can follow the joke, by saying, “all kidding aside” or “on a more serious note”, for example. Or you can make the joke so crazy and outrageous, no one could take it seriously.
