If the people are so stupid, they’d buy the “it was a joke” excuse, then they are also too stupid to get the joke in the first place.

There are ways to make it clear you are joking. You can follow the joke, by saying, “all kidding aside” or “on a more serious note”, for example. Or you can make the joke so crazy and outrageous, no one could take it seriously.

Yes but a really good way to tell if she was joking or not is to listen to her say it. I haven't heard her remarks. You may also be able to make an informed opinion by a person's history. From her history, I know she was being serious

I may say, "hey! I'm voting for Hillary"! Am I joking when I say that? Look at my posting history.
