GOP candidate makes Núñez look saintly
December 3, 2007
Nearly two years into history's longest presidential campaign, Americans have already heard a bit about the pros and a lot about the cons of all the major candidates. On the Republican side, the desperate attempts of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and ex-Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney to redefine themselves as social conservatives are old news. So are concerns about Arizona Sen. John McCain's age and temperament, and about former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson's phlegmatic campaign style.
So when the spotlight finally settled on a fresh face Mike Huckabee, an affable, successful former Arkansas governor without a penchant for flip-flopping no wonder he zoomed up the polls.
Unfortunately for Huckabee, the positive first impression he often makes fades when you learn more about him. He may have been a solid steward in his 14 years as lieutenant governor and governor in Arkansas. But he also showed an enthusiasm for parlaying his public office into a cushy lifestyle that makes Fabian NÚñez, California's similarly inclined Assembly speaker, look like a Boy Scout.
Over the years, Huckabee has:
Used campaign funds to pay himself $14,000 for being his own media consultant.
Used campaign funds to pay himself $43,000 for use of his private plane while attempting to hide what the payment was actually in return for.
Used an account set up to cover operational costs of the governor's mansion to pay such obviously personal expenses as fast-food and dry-cleaning bills.
Set up a nonprofit organization that paid him $23,500 without disclosing the source of the money.
Attempted to take $70,000 of furniture with him when moving out of the governor's mansion.
Took more than 130 gifts worth more than $300,000 while suing to overturn a law that made him disclose the gifts.
We could go on in this vein, but space is limited. The bottom line: Mike Huckabee has an awful lot of explaining to do. And neither voters nor the national media should let the man Arkansas journalists call the Huckster get away with pretending that tough questions over his tawdry ethics record amount to mudslinging.
Well to tell the truth I don't see much difference in huckster and hillary, they both like to steal furniture.
The MSM is promoting him now, because if he wins, the illegal alien invasion issue will be nullified in the election.
But after he is nominated, expect the MSM to "discover" his corruption, then it'll be Elmer Gantry time, all the way to November 2008.
I'm just doing my part to stave off an utter disaster.
Corsi co-wrote Swiftboats, and saved us from John Kerry.
Now he's trying to save us from the Huckster, again, by using the historical record.
"Meet the Huckster" is the actual title of the piece in the San Diego Union Tribune.
Huck is a pro life Democrat. This is a conservative forum. We don’t care if the leftist has an R next to their name.
This is not a RNC cheerleading site. It took me 45 days here to figure that out.
The Huckester is Hillery in a suit and tie.
Just when you think there are a few to many RINOs
in the race along with L Ron Paul, the Huckester
comes along with his nanny state views.
This small town, no experience in military and national security a joke.
Have people forgotten, we are at war and we don’t need someone on training wheels for commander in chief
I don’t care if he was a 4 star general, his treason to the illegal alien invasion rules him out for me.
You and me both. I'm about to send out an e-mail to 200 believers handicapping the 2008 election and I'll be using this article as the lead-in.
BUMP!
This guy Huckabee sounds like another Bill Clinton when it comes to helping himself to the goodies.
‘Clintonian’ is the word that keeps running through my head when I hear Hucksters name mentioned.
Especially the tuition breaks for illegals.
Tyson money made from illegals means more to
the Huckester than what the illegals are doing to our country.
That’s excellent!
I (actually my parents) had to pay out of state tuition to send me to the University of Maryland when Rutgers in the DPRNJ put me on waitlist 20 years ago.
If I was an illegal alien I would have gotten the in state rates. Ah, who cares, it wasn’t my money, (the lib mantra) just my parents who came here legally from a sinkhole country and slaved in thankless jobs to put me through school.
Informative post. In fact I thought it would be a positive spin for Huckabee and was glad to be wrong.
Name calling? I like “chuck huck”.
Here in Calif. they get various breaks while legal residents pay up big time.
Besides the illegal children living on this side of the border using our elementry to high schools here in San Diego, there are also thousands that cross daily to use the schools.
Not only costing us tax payers, but making a disaster of our schoold system.
You mentioned Rutgers, I have several relatives who are grads. from there in NJ.
As you said, if you were an illegal, you would have had it made.
