A Border Patrol agent working with a specially trained dog discovered about 15,000 pounds of marijuana and what appears to be the opening of a tunnel inside a shipping container near Tecate early Monday.
The trailer-sized container is on a private lot about a quarter mile northwest of the border crossing.
The tunnels opening is in the floor of the container, said Sammy Anderson, head of the Border Patrols El Cajon office. The opening is about 3 feet by 3 feet and appears to be reinforced with lumber.
The dog led the agent to the container about 4:45 a.m. The door was slightly ajar, Border Patrol spokesman Damon Foreman said, and when the agent opened it farther, an individual inside jumped into the tunnel opening and has not been found.
Mexican authorities are continuing to look for the other end of the tunnel in the Mexican city of Tecate. An interagency tunnel task force is testing the passageway to ensure it is properly ventilated before agents venture deep inside, Foreman said.
No arrests have been made. The container is on private property, but authorities have not yet determined who owns it.
Good story. Too bad they didn’t get the perp.
