The Republican Party of Virginia State Central Committee yesterday evening passed a motion requesting the Virginia State Board of Elections withdraw the “statement of intent” requirement before participating in the 2008 Republican presidential primary contest.
While the committee did request the Virginia State Board of Elections to withdraw the requirement to sign a statement of intent for the 2008 primary, State Central re-emphasized their commitment to closed primaries by passing a resolution supporting party registration in Virginia.
“The State Central Committee was very clear about including all Virginia registered voters that share our values and believe in the principles of the Republican Party of Virginia,” stated RPV Chairman John Hager. “Our original request for an statement of intent was based on precedent from the 2000 presidential primary, but in 2008 the Democrats will have an active contest as well. RPV's State Central Committee therefore determined the contingent statement was not necessary to prevent crossover.”
“The goal of the Republican Party of Virginia is to build our party,” stated Hager, “and while Republicans feel very strongly they should be the ones to pick their nominees, we do not want to exclude those who have a great interest in our process and support our party in good faith.”
“The State Central Committee felt it very important to stress the importance of party registration in Virginia,” emphasized Hager. “In the grand scheme of things, we want to be able to protect the integrity of the nomination process while being as inclusive as possible.”
The Republican Party of Virginia State Central Committee met Friday evening at the 24th Annual RPV Advance, which runs through the weekend and ends on December 2nd.
My hunch is that bit was an attempt to take away some Ron Paul votes.
Yep I’m a conservative who tends to vote republican not the other way around.
A big reason why Virgina is going from Red to Blue is that the Republican state party leadership, like the national party leadership at the RNC, is run by RINOs, as are some of the big population areas like Fairfax County and Virginia Beach.
These elites are totally removed from the overwhelmingly conservative Republican voters and Reagan Democrats. Two examples are these elites’ stand on taxes and illegal immigration. Their obstruction to legislation directed to these two issues really turned off the voters in 2006 and this year.
It’s hard to get voter turnout or campaign cash when your own party is calling you a bigot and unwilling to help poor people. Most of the successful candidates now run their own campaigns and ignore the party hierarchy.
Bad news is that these people are pretty entrenched, so ther’s not much hope for change in the next several elections. But these clowns are well liked by the Washington Post.
