Maricopa County sheriffs deputies arrested eight illegal immigrants on Saturday during a protest outside a Phoenix furniture store embroiled in a heated immigration debate.
Immigration activists have gathered on Saturdays for the past six weeks outside Pruitts furniture store to challenge Sheriff Joe Arpaios enforcement of immigration laws. Saturday was the first time deputies made arrests during the rallies. The day laborers were arrested on suspicion of violating immigration laws.
Deputies had arrested 24 illegal immigrants in the area before Saturday, but those arrests were not made during protests.
I thought it was time to do something more about it, Arpaio said Saturday night. The Pruitts situation is getting out of hand. They are demonstrating every week and destroying this business. I dont think thats fair.
Demonstrators began protesting at the store near Thomas Road and 34th Street in late October, when the store hired sheriffs deputies to keep day laborers away from the property.
The store asked the sheriffs office to help because they felt the presence of day laborers was hurting their business.
More than 100 protesters have shown up for the rallies, including officials from the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona.
The unions legal director, Daniel Pochoda, was arrested by deputies Nov. 5 after he was asked to attend a rally to observe the interaction between protesters and deputies.

WOO HOO! GO SHERIFF JOE!
I love it.
I’m left speechless. Finally, someone with balls.
Ditto!
It’s about time someone arrested these criminals.
Ping from bcsco’s list.
Sure, he was arrested for "observing". JOE FOR PREZ!!
Finally, a sane reaction to illegal immigrant UNMITIGATED GALL. They are here illegally. They are behaving illegally. Hope they like pink jumpsuits and baloney sandwiches.
What’s the deal with the furniture store?
NM Ping.
JOE! JOE! JOE! JOE!
It causes honest and decent Americans to work hard to take back what the indecent, dishonest, and treacherous office holders in Washington have ceded away without lifting a finger. But I salute the business owner and the sheriff for starting to take back this country, even it is just one furniture store parking lot at a time.
Wow. This article really makes my day! Finally, someone has the courage to enforce the existing laws!
And, before the leftist sob-sisters begin howling about how cruel this is to the illegal aliens, they'd best recall that any illegal who protested like this in Mexico would have been sent straight out of the country on a catapult.
The furniture store owner got tired of day laborers occupying his parking lot, peeing in public, harassing his customers, and so he hired off-duty sheriff’s deputies to keep them off of his PRIVATE PROPERTY. This illegals didn’t like being forced off of his PRIVATE PROPERTY, so they began demonstrating, with the help of the Arizona Civil Liberties Union. To sum up: the illegals and the ACLU think private property rights is a RACE CRIME.
Next week get more of them.
Attorney General Joe Arpaio has a nice ring to it.
From what I understand day laborers were hanging out in front of the furniture store- the owner did not want them gathering there, he thought it was harming his business. The owner hired (off duty?) deputies to keep them away and the illegals began having protests there in retaliation.
My feeling is that many illegals are getting over the top with the in your face attitude, protests & what not. Something has to be done- it is past time.
Can you imagine being in Mexico illegally and taking part in unruly protests- just imagine the reaction. We really need to stand up to this sort of behavior. It irks me to no end to see the illegals in your face protests- they need to be gathered up.
