Don’t “underestimate” Jones. He was from that cadre of priests of his era and ilk that thought more about far-left liberal issues than they thought Christianity in particular or even religion in general.

There was a time that the turned collar gave them the standing in the community they needed to bring their far-left issues into the mainstream.

The Berrigans were classic examples of this. Once the Vietnam was was over, one of them left the church and married a nun!

Jones is not a priest. He is a pastor, Methodist Church.

And yes, the Methodist Church embraced left issues. But embracing the struggle for civil rights was not a leftist issue. Sure left wingers infiltrated and used the civil rights movement for their own purposes. But all who were involved in the civil rights movement were not leftist radicals.

But the Methodist Church has always been about deeds, good deeds and social activism.
