Jr G was a handful in the second and third grade because we were in a very “progressive” northern school district that wouldn’t touch him and he knew it. I finally told him if I got another call to the school, I was going to bring my spoon and paddle him in the principal’s office, which I did and I did. He stopped being a handful.
Fast forward a year... we have moved to central Tennessee and he was now in a southern school. Repeat handful shtick. This time the principal saved me the time and trouble of a trip to school and paddled Jr G himself, without even a consultation with me (I would have endorsed the procedure had he called)
End of handful shtick forever.
My boys know this.
Do I have to discipline them? No, they're straight A, model students because they know what is expected of them. I don't expect straight As, but they know I do expect them to apply themselves, pay attention, do their work, etc. And yes, I am an involved parent, helping them study (when asked), and with homework (again when needed).
Sounds like maybe the mother needs a whoopin'...
You don’t think the same policy is in effect in the ‘burbs? Ha! All school districts are fearful of suits such as this mother is going to bring.
A little discipline at home wouldn’t hurt. The more it’s exercised at home, the less problem teachers have in the class. In this instance, I’m going out on a limb and assuming the single mom doesn’t exercise much discipline, self or otherwise. Discipline doesn’t have to be physical, either. A little time upfront showing kids proper behavior by example goes a long way.
That story warms my heart!
I think this is more reason to end gov’t schools altogether. No wonder the kids grow up thinking they can do whatever they want. The teacher needs to be able to spank the kids in front of the class instantly or there isnt much point in it. Public humiliation works every time its tried!
“He ain’t thar for larnin’; he’s thar to keep him outta mah hair!”
How did Hub say it about disaplining youth in “Secondhand Lions”?
Me too. Got whacked good with a ruler in 2nd grade more than once.
Got whacked lots of other times to for lots of good reasons.
Good thing I got whacked or Lord knows how I’d have turned out.
Gotcha beat...I got my butt paddled the second day of the first grade! But IT WASN’T MY FAULT...whine....
Yep, a six year old boy deserves to be hit by his teacher for not following instructions. You are one messed up dude.
Times have definitely changed but times changing or not, if you touch my kid you will pay for it. In ways you don't want to even begin to imagine. And no, that is not internet bravado, I mean it with every ounce of my being.
A 6-year-old never needs a spanking?? You a twisted idiot.
As far as the mother's claim that it was a brutal beating, I think I'll take the teacher's word unless it can be shown otherwise.
And how is your kid? Is he a bully? Does he disrupt class? Does he treat his classmates with respect? Does he treat his teacher with respect?
If yes to all I doubt he'd ever need a spanking. If no, one would do him a lot of good.
I apologize for calling you a twisted idiot. Name calling doesn’t resolve anything.
I don’t think they stop at using rulers anymore.......

I don’t know - but here in Arkansas - paddling is still legal from the state’s point of view. It is up to the individual districts. You can draw a direct correlation here between the size and performance of the school and smaller surrounding schools- the larger “inner-city” schools generally have major discipline problems - and do not allow corporal punishment (paddling). Most smaller and rural schools still allow corporal punishment, and often have far less discipline problems.
