Plus, a number of rifles can switch calibers by switching barrels (and in some cases, bolts and/or magazines.)
I think the idea was found to be unfeasible way back in 1918 with the Petersen device for the 1903 Springfield.
Why carry the equivalent of two rifles into a battle or one rifle with spare parts for a different caliber.
