Sears has had the “reverse Midas touch” for years. Look at what they did to KMart and Sportmart, to name a couple of stores that I can name off the top of my head.

They didn't do anything to KMart. KMart failed quite nicely on it's own and went into bankruptcy. They got themselves out of bankruptcy by closing stores and selling what was extremely valuable real estate. They not only made enough from real estate sales to get out of bankruptcy, but to buy into Sears and merge with them.

Sears was already having problems of it's own as well.

Now the combined companies are back to looking at how much they can make from selling the real estate from their failing stores again.
