Saudi Court to Review Case of Rape Victim Sentenced to 200 Lashes

November 28, 2007

A Saudi court will review the case of a teenage gang rape victim sentenced to jail and flogging after she was convicted of violating the country's strict sex segregation laws, the foreign minister said Tuesday.

The remarks by Prince Saud al-Faisal, made in the United States and carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, were the latest in response to a salvo of international condemnation of Saudi judicial authorities' handling of the case.

It was also a sharp turn from a statement Saturday in which the Saudi Justice Ministry condemned the 19-year-old woman — raped by seven men and then sentenced to six months prison and 200 lashes — as an adulteress who had allegedly confessed to cheating on her husband.

In the statement, the ministry said the flogging sentence would be carried out and condemned foreign interference. The statement likely sought to ease international outrage over the case by discrediting the woman.

On Tuesday, SPA quoted al-Faisal as saying "the Saudi judiciary will review the case."

But al-Faisal was also on the defensive and maintained the case was being used against Saudi authorities.

"What is outraging about this case is that it is being used against the Saudi government and people," he said, speaking in Annapolis, Md., where he was attending the U.S.-hosted Mideast peace conference.

Now it’s 200 lashes? Just the other day it was 20 or 40. Sheesh.

ROP Solution - in any crime involving a woman, it’s the woman’s fault; in any crime involving only men, it’s probably a woman’s fault, anyway. And the fault of infidels, too, of course.

We should have Saturation Bombed Saudi, along with Egypt after the 9/11 killers were found to be from there.

They’re going to have to be dealt with at some point, because those fat oligarchs in Riyahd are hanging on by a thread, and that peninsula is the biggest prize on the jihadist wish list.

It is the ambition of the folks who sponsored 9/11 to overthrow and murder the Saudi royal family and their supporters.

What kind of victory would it be over AlQaida to turn around and do their dirty work for them in Saudi?

I strongly suspect you have been reading too many Democrat party talking points ~ that stuff'll make you go blind.

Mecca and Medina are the holiest sites and are in the Western portion of the country. The oil is mostly over on the East Coast. I see an easy solution here.....

where were these fat despots when their citizenry were plotting these crimes. this is not a free society and they should have come down hard, if not before 9/11, then right after.

...and I don’t take talking points from you, FR or the dims. But it looks like you have all the talking points right in front of you.

We had a friggin socialist president in 1941 and this guy not only put Japanese, Italians and Germans in CAMPS, but he also shut down the borders and deported.

Our president has sat on his hands while our borders remained wide open and Islamics have moved into this country to the point where 10,000 mosques have opened since 9/11, here in the USA.

FDR put "enemy aliens" in camps, AND he put American citizens in camps ~ mostly women and children.

Not quite sure that can be construed to be the same sort of thing as doing a firebombing run on a relatively peaceful country not otherwise involved in active warfare.

Anyway, AlQaida is the enemy of the folks who run Saudi. What they were doing earlier, before 9/11, is regularly chopping off the heads of troublemakers. When it came to Osama Bin Laden, they'd taken away his citizenship and deported him.

See what a fat lot of good deportation does?

He was reduced to doing business in Sudan and other equally nasty third world hellholes.

Why you want to reduce Riyadh to nuclear ash is beyond me. That just does Bin Laden's work.

..because they didn’t chop Bin Laden’s head off when they had the chance? Stupid people rarely survive, especially autocratic rulers who are too stupid to kill their enemies when they have the chance.

This could be even worse news for the victim. Another court reviewed her case and upped the lashes from 40 to 200!! By the time this new court gets done, she could end up getting herself stoned and beheaded for allowing herself to be gang-raped!!

These people make me ill!!!

It will be interesting to see if Prince al-Faisal has any influence over the court.
I think additional pressure came from Pres. Bush (and Laura)

In stark contrast, here in the USA, in any crime involving anyone, it is Bush's fault, (according to the Democrats)!

Osama comes from a very powerful and well-connected family. If you wonder how he could get off so light, ask yourself why Ted Kennedy never had to pay for what he did to Mary Jo.

Unfortunately, our country has had to pay for both of those lapses of justice.

You make an excellent point. Small wonder the powers in charge [that would be bin Laden’s son-in-law] make haste to pardon 1500 al Qaeda terrorists!

They can chop off all the heads from murderers and rapists, and chop off the hands of thieves, for all I care. But this is a gross miscarriage of justice by anybody’s standards and I hope the Saudi’s reverse her conviction and give the rapists the lashes.
