American Red Cross president and chief executive Mark W. Everson resigned today because he engaged in a personal relationship with an employee.
Everson, who previously was commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service, took over the Red Cross on May 29 as the federally chartered disaster-relief agency struggled to restore a reputation damaged by its response to Hurricane Katrina. He oversaw a broad restructuring plan for the $3.4 billion organization.
Everson's resignation is effective immediately. He was engaged in a personal relationship with a subordinate female employee, agency spokeswoman Suzy C. DeFrancis said. A senior executive at the Red Cross informed the board of directors about the affair about 10 days ago and the board asked Everson to resign, DeFrancis said.
"It concluded that the situation reflected poor judgment on Mr. Everson's part and diminished his ability to lead the organization in the future," according to a Red Cross news release.
Everson, 53, who is married and has two children, released a statement today saying, "I am resigning my position for personal and family reasons and deeply regret it is impossible for me to continue in a job so recently undertaken. . . . I leave with extraordinary admiration for the American Red Cross, the service its men and women provide our nation, and for the humanitarian work of the Red Cross/Red Crescent movement across the world."

This guy has a consensual relationship with a subordinate and gets fired for it? I thought the Clinton rule was that this is OK now, it’s just personal. In fact, isn’t the Clinton rule that you can have sex with interns and rape women, and not only keep your job but also get back into the White House as First Husband? So confusing...
what a mess. They can’t keep anyone in that position.
That's only if they're wearing a *blue* dress. In this case the poor victim was wearing green, so they've got to throw the book at him.
How soon before the Red Cross HQs moves to SF.
