“I have it from a major player in MS politics
that Trent Lott will not run for reelection.

Do you know why he’s stepping down in December?

Turd Lott leaving the Senate is a good thing. He still deserves scorn for the manner in which he conducted Clinton’s impeachment, IMHO.

My dream is that Barber appoints Pickering and Pickering is given a slot on the Judiciarty Committee and the day he shows up he tells Leaky lehey that what Cheney told him was too mild. Then Leaky has a. Cardiac event.

It's a sensible time to do it. His replacement can step in at the very beginning of the next session rather than joining it in the middle. The appointee will also have four full years as an incumbent before he stands for election.

That I do not know.
But it could be the same reason Chip Pickering
announced he was not running for reelection
so Haley could appoint Chip to the Senate.
The reason for the exact timing I have no idea.

I agree. He is the epitome of the faux southern quasi conservative RINO. He's a RINO that is as much a Republican as Specter, Chafee and Kennedy. Screw the Republicans if they can't get a conservative in place. They vote like democrats, spend like democrats and regulate like democrats..... they're DEMOCRATS.

In all things from taxes to government growth the Republican party has been infiltrated by "former" democrats that look to the giant breast from DC to feed all the nipple people. The best tag line I've seen describes the current candidates... "The 'p' in Democrat stands for patriotism." 'nuff said.

That would be great news, I admit I hadn’t thought that far ahead (more coffee please), I was just upset at the thought of yet another Senator abandoning ship (RINO or not).

don’t forget lott used to be a democrat.

To be expected for almost every southern politician from the post-Civil War century. LBJ changed the southern political landscape.

Correction: The appointee will get one full year, assuming Mississippi schedules the special election to coincide with next year’s general election.

For the GOP to become Republican again, a few more RINOs need to follow Lott out the door.

I believe he will be missed by his colleagues as he knows so much about how the joint runs.

you're mistaking his staff from the senator. puhleeze. this clown was a pig in the trough and is a democrat in RINO clothing. All former democrats have this conservative speech down till it's nut crunching time and then they decide to "move to the middle".

see ya, Trent it's been...... average. bless his heart.

Lott was on the right side with the Law of the Sea Treaty......he called it “the U.N. on steroids.”

He was on the WRONG side of illegal immigration.

I still believe the GOP will hold this Senate seat,
hopefully with a REAL conservative.

Well Trent Lott used to be a Democrat. A lot of these former Democrats are still Democrats on spending. Yes, they are all socially conservative Southerners, but still Southern New Dealers.

I really hope that everyone who today claims they will not vote in 2008 if their favorite candidate is not the Presidential nominee at least works their butts off to keep our Senate seats, and votes R for the other offices.

Ha. Have you not seen the "will you stay home in 08" thread?

There are at least 20% of rabbid freepers who will crawl across broken glass to stay home and teach the GOP a lesson if Hunter or Tancredo are not nominated...and will let Hillary "teach them a lesson".

If you figure out a way to satiate those people, we have a chance of pulling off another 50.1% v. 49.9% win.

Other than that, look for a 55/45 "landslide" for an organized Hillary, 'popular' taxes to follow.

The rumor is that that Barbour will appoint Chip Pickering as Lott’s replacement.
