The Washington Post is reporting that Barbour has announced that there will be a special election next November. They also report that it’s likely Barbour will name Rep. Roger Wicker as interim Senator.
I suspect that Lott wanted to retire before the last election...but the state party talked him into continuing...with this interesting scenario...Trent does a easy cake-walk to win a six-year term. The party brings in a outsider to the state...who they give the state university chancellor job to (Retired AF general “Doc” Fogelsong). Lott puts in his time...and the right point arrives...to announce the retirement of Lott. The governor has to appoint a guy...who gets 11 months before elections to make his impressive start. Fogelsong easily wins the election next fall with impressive numbers.
So I’m predicted the governor picks the state chancellor...Fogelsong...as the replacement.

“Not directly but he can in resign with the undstanding he will be appointed to the job by the Lt Gov. that replaces them. We had a Minnesota Gov do that in the 1970s or 80s.”
He can also leave the state on a trip so that the Lt. Gov. becomes Acting Governor, and the Lt. Gov. can thus appoint him to the Senate; in states where the Lt. Gov. does not become Acting Gov. automatically upon the Governor’s absence from the state, the Gov. can sign over his powers temporarily (because he’d be under the knife, for example). Not resigning gives the Governor something to fall back upon in case the Lt. Gov. double-crosses him.
Of course, getting yourself appointed to the Senate tends to be unpopular with the voters, and people who do that usually lose in the next election.

Who will pick better Justices and make taxes less likely, Rudy or Hillary?
Sitting out and not voting means you voted Hillary.
Voting third party means you voted Hillary.
I am no fan of Rudy and I hope he is not the winner, but if it is between that man and a Democrat (which wants to do 10,000% or social damage), then Rudy gets the vote.
Sometimes logic has to trump the desire to get everything we want all at once.
WTF, Lott was already voted in through 2012 and is leaving at the end of 2007? Something stinks to high heaven here that goes way beyond lobbying IMO.
Whatever the stench, I’d still rather have Pickering...if he makes it...
If Barbour names Roger Wicker to the Senate, we might just lose the seat. We need Chip Pickering to run.
BTW, Wicker is in bed with liberal Democrats such as Ted Kennedy in their support for Puerto Rico’s “Commonwealth status,” which results in billions of federal dollars being sent to Puerto Rico but the 4 million U.S. citizens that live there not having to pay federal income taxes (except for employees of the federal government) or the right to vote for the President or members of Congress. Wicker actually appeared with Ted Kennedy and other liberal Democrats in a TV ad supporting liberal Democrat Aníbal Acevedo-Vilá for Governor of Puerto Rico, and wrote an op-ed for The Washington Post in support of Acevedo-Vilá when he stole the 2004 gubernatorial election by getting spoiled ballots (marked three times for two offices) to be counted for him. I assume that Wicker will again come to Acevedo-Vilá’s defense when the Governor and/or his closest cronies are indicted in federal court for corruption (which indictments are expected as early as this week).
