(Fred) Thompson Strolls Through S.C. Gun Show ("It's a beautiful day in Paradise")

Thompson Strolls Through S.C. Gun Show

By JIM DAVENPORT – 2 hours ago

LADSON, S.C. (AP) — White House hopeful Fred Thompson called his trip down aisle of rifles, shotguns and pistols at a gun show "a day in paradise," and said he wished he could come back to spend more time and money.

It was the former Tennessee senator and "Law and Order" actor's second trip to a gun show since launching his late bid for the GOP nomination in September.

He reached out and picked up an old M-1 Garand rifle and raised an over-and-under Winchester shotgun suitable for the skeet shooting he's been known to do as he made his way through the 200 vendors at The Land of the Sky Gun Show at a fairgrounds just outside of North Charleston, S.C.

"It's a beautiful day in paradise," Thompson said when greeted by one of the people packing the show's aisles.

Thompson was a hit with James Hill, 65, from Summerville. "It's absolutely important to come to gun shows," Hill said. Thompson, he said, wins his support because he's strong on Second Amendment gun ownership rights. "He's right where our strength is."

Anthony DiPaolo, 22, said he wasn't ready to settle on a presidential candidate yet, but said he'd narrowed his field to three Republicans — Thompson, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney. "I like Fred Thompson's stance on firearms," he said. "I don't want to see anymore assaults on my Second Amendment rights."

But DiPaolo added that he also liked Giuliani's handling of the terrorist attacks in New York and Romney's "business plan." And, he has doubts about Thompson's ability to win the nomination.

"I just think he got in too late," DiPaolo said.

While mingling with the crowd, someone else mentioned the late entry and Thompson responded that he got in at just the right time.

That’s obviously a shotgun he’s looking down the barrel of, not a rifle.

The Associated Press has never been my first choice of places to go for accurate firearms information   :-)

Your observations are correct but when I am looking at a shotgun I close one eye and look down the sight plane. Don’t know why, just do.

How much do you want to bet that Fred himself doesn’t actually own a gun...

Since you posed the question, how much are you willing to put up?

I think Fred is the only conservative that can win the nomination. As much as I like Hunter, he stands no chance. Huckabee is only 1/2 of a conservative, despite the Chuck Norris endorsement. (G)

Fred Thompson on the 2nd Amendment:

I strongly support the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which protects an individual’s right to keep and bear arms. Gun control is touted as a major crime-control measure. But some of the places with the strictest gun-control laws also have high violent-crime rates. Disarming law-abiding citizens does not prevent crime. The answer to violent crime is smart, effective, and aggressive law enforcement. The real effect of these gun-control measures is to place onerous restrictions on law-abiding citizens who use firearms for such legal activities as self-defense, sport-shooting, hunting, and collecting. I am committed to:

* Strictly enforcing existing laws and severely punishing violent criminals.
* Protecting the rights individual Americans enjoy under the Second Amendment.

Why does this man have his finger on the trigger in both pix.

Doesn’t appear he’s too familiar with firearms, if he was, he’d know......keep your finger off the trigger.

Treat the weapon as if it were loaded....all the time.

Comfortable with weapons or photo op????

Thanks for the link to the M1 Site. What a fine piece it was. Crawl through mud, flush it out with water and it fires reliably. Get a thumb weld to your cheek or come away from the range with a black eye. With bayonet fixed, it is the best balanced rifle for manual of arms drill ever. I believe the Army and Marine drill teams still drill with the M1 (correct me if I am wrong).

You're quite welcome, and agreed on all counts.  I'm not sure about drill team equipment, but I'm sure that someone more familiar will drop by shortly to confirm or correct  :-)

Didn’t he get the memo! Politicians are only allowed to hold guns in simulated hunting trips. The MSM will ONLY cover a campaigning politician when the can cover a candidate as supporting the “sporting second amendment”. This individual right second amendment will cause the MSM computers to melt.

Good point. I wonder if he checked to make sure it was unloaded? I remember one time I was at a friends house and one of his buddies came over to show off his new H&K rifle. Thousands of dollars and looked like something out of Star Wars to me!

He pulls it out of the case and starts to hand it to my friend. I stopped him and said “Excuse me, can you show me that its not loaded.” He gave me an odd look and chuckled and said “Of course its not loaded” and started to hand it over again. I stopped him again and made him open the action to prove to me it wasn’t loaded. After he did (it wasn’t loaded) I promptly left as I don’t like to be in the presence of jerks if I don’t have to.
